Do modality and frequency matter in predicting reading proficiency from vocabulary knowledge? A comparison of meaning recognition and meaning recall
Vocabulary knowledge is a strong predictor of reading ability, yet findings remain inconclusive regarding how different modalities of vocabulary knowledge, such as meaning recognition and recall, predict reading comprehension. This study compared the predictive strength of these modalities for reading ability across different frequency levels, and examined whether these effects differed between higher- and lower-proficiency readers and extended t…
Establishing meaning recall and meaning recognition vocabulary knowledge as distinct psychometric constructs in relation to reading proficiency
The purpose of this paper is to (a) establish whether meaning recall and meaning recognition item formats test psychometrically distinct constructs of vocabulary knowledge which measure separate skills, and, if so, (b) determine whether each construct possesses unique properties predictive of L2 reading proficiency. Factor analyses and hierarchical regression were conducted on results derived from the two vocabulary item formats in order to test …

Using confidence intervals to determine adequate item sample sizes for vocabulary tests
The last three decades have seen an increase of tests aimed at measuring an individual’s vocabulary level or size. The target words used in these tests are typically sampled from word frequency lists, which are in turn based on language corpora. Conventionally, test developers sample items from frequency bands of 1000 words; different tests employ different sampling ratios. Some have as few as 5 or 10 items representing the underlying population …
Predicting L2 reading proficiency with modalities of vocabulary knowledge
Vocabulary’s relationship to reading proficiency is frequently cited as a justification for the assessment of L2 written receptive vocabulary knowledge. However, to date, there has been relatively little research regarding which modalities of vocabulary knowledge have the strongest correlations to reading proficiency, and observed differences have often been statistically non-significant. The present research employs a bootstrapping approach to r…

Can Smartphones and Privacy Coexist? Assessing Technologies and Regulations Protecting Personal Data on Android and iOS Devices
As smartphones become more ubiquitous around the globe, policymakers inevitably have to grapple with issues related to the security and privacy of these devices. This report assesses smartphone users' privacy from technical and regulatory perspectives. It describes a literature review, experiments on the two major smartphone platforms (Google's Android and Apple's iOS), and federal regulation for protecting privacy in the United States.
Comparing Multidimensional and Continuum Models of Vocabulary Acquisition
Second language vocabulary acquisition has been modeled both as multidimensional in nature and as a continuum wherein the learner's knowledge of a word develops along a cline from recognition through production. In order to empirically examine and compare these models, the authors assess the degree to which the Vocabulary Knowledge Scale ( VKS ; Paribakht & Wesche, 1993), which implicitly assumes a cline model of acquisition, conforms to a linear…
