  • Public health professionals’ perspectives on alcohol public health interventions

Open Access•Sarah Dance, Andrew Weyman et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2026

The findings of this study highlight systemic constraints which affect the development process for alcohol public health interventions. Findings also highlight principles for effective community-based alcohol interventions. Proposed factors affecting alcohol-related inequality may represent intervention targets. These insights can be used to improve the intervention development process for alcohol public health interventions, as well as better ac…

  • What is the effect of presenting evidence of the mental vs physical health benefits of quitting smoking on motivation to stop smoking? An online randomised controlled experiment

Open Access•Katherine Sawyer, Adham Hanafi et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

    clinicaltrials.gov NCT06762756, on 19/12/2024. Retrospectively registered

  • Effectiveness of Mental Health Warnings on Tobacco Packaging in People With and Without Common Mental Health Conditions

Open Access•Katherine Sawyer, Chloe Burke et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

MHWLs could be an effective means to communicate novel information about the effects of smoking on mental health. MHWLs are perceived as less effective, believable, arousing, unpleasant, and acceptable than PHWLs, but MHWLs evoke more reactance and are rated as more novel

  • Exploring the use of workplaces to recruit “hard-to-reach” male drinkers to a survey on alcohol use and awareness of health messages

Open Access•Sarah Dance, Charlotte Dack et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

Workplace-based recruitment, using in-person recruitment and a financial incentive, may be a feasible strategy to recruit male drinkers from lower SES backgrounds. Pilot results may direct larger scale research aiming to understand alcohol use in this population and inform targeted public health messages. Workplace-based recruitment may represent a promising avenue for future research aiming to tackle inequalities in participation in alcohol rese…

  • All suffering together’

Christine Griffin, Madeleine Freeman et al.•ARTICLE•Addiction Research & Theory•2018

Background: There is a pervasive norm of drinking to intoxication among young people in many affluent countries, despite recent falls in overall alcohol consumption. Students’ accounts of their experiences of alcohol hangovers have not been explored in any depth, which is surprising given the high rates of heavy episodic drinking amongst this group. This study investigated student drinkers’ lay health beliefs about alcohol hangovers, considering …

  • Improving Receipt and Preventive Care Delivery for Adolescents and Young Adults

Open Access•Claire D Brindis, Lauren Twietmeyer et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Health Journal•2017

  • Prevalence and Treatment of Mental Health and Substance Use Problems in the Early Emerging Adult Years in the United States

    Open Access•Sally Adams, David K Knopf et al.•ARTICLE•Emerging Adulthood•2013

Onset of most mental disorders occurs by the mid-20s, yet studies of mental health (MH) status are limited for younger adults (YAs) aged 18–25. The objectives were to determine YAs’ rates of MH and substance use (SU) disorders, treatment, and sociodemographic disparities. To determine relative vulnerability and unmet need, overall rates were compared between ages 18–25 and 26–34. Using the 2010 National Survey on Drug Use and Health ( n = 25,216)…

  • Caregiver acceptability and preferences for preventive dental treatments for young African‐American children

Open Access•Sally Adams, Sally H Adams et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2012

All treatments were acceptable, however, parents/guardians strongly preferred TB. Parents' emphasis on healthy habits and child-focused treatment supports efforts for oral health education programs in early childhood settings. Some parents expressed concerns about FV, XF, and CHX. Results may be useful in planning prevention programs for young children in African-American communities

  • Caregiver Acceptability and Preferences for Early Childhood Caries Preventive Treatments for Hispanic Children

Open Access•Sally Adams, Sally H Adams et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2009

All five treatments were highly acceptable, however, when choosing among treatments overall, fluoride varnish and toothbrushing were favored over other treatments

  • Developing an Acceptability Assessment of Preventive Dental Treatments

Open Access•Susan Hyde, Stuart A Gansky et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2008

The acceptability instrument described is reliable and valid and may be useful in program planning efforts to identify and increase the utilization of preferred ECC preventive treatments for target populations

  • Psychobiologic Reactivity to Stress and Childhood Respiratory Illnesses

W Thomas Boyce, Margaret Chesney et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1995

Psychological stress is thought to undermine host resistance to infection through neuroendocrine-mediated changes in immune competence. Associations between stress and infection have been modest in magnitude, however, suggesting individual variability in stress response. We therefore studied environmental stressors, psychobiologic reactivity to stress, and respiratory illness incidence in two studies of 236 preschool children. In Study 1, 137 3- …
