Projection of temperature-related severe injuries under climate change
This nationwide study indicates that the temperature rise under the climate change scenario may contribute to an increase in the future burden of injuries in South Korea, particularly transport injuries and injuries due to contact with chemicals or other substances. Our findings may be informative for public health policies aiming at alleviating the health burden in the context of global warming
Association of ambient temperatures with suicide attempts and violence with the future projections under climate change scenarios
The nationwide study about South Korea shows that there are associations between an increase in outdoor temperatures and increased risks of suicide attempts and violence, and each excess injury related to temperature is projected to grow under the SSP scenarios. Our findings might provide informative evidence for relevant action plans against climate change and intentional injuries
Long-term trends in cycle threshold values
Background With the emergence of COVID-19 cases, governments quickly responded with aggressive testing, contact tracing, isolation and quarantine measures. South Korea’s testing strategy primarily relied on real-time reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (real-time RT-PCR), focusing on cycle threshold (Ct) values, indicative of viral load, to determine COVID-19 positivity. This study examined the long-term time series distribution of Ct…
Resting-State Brain Variability in Youth With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
In this study, we sought to determine the nature of the abnormality in resting-state default mode network (DMN) activation and explore its correlation with functional connectivity in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We obtained resting-state functional magnetic resonance images of youth with ADHD and typically developing counterparts from the publicly available ADHD-200 database. We used data from Peking University (232 scans) and…
Prevalence and predictors of heated tobacco products use among male ever smokers
The results showed that vaping experience regardless of current smoking behavior and higher socioeconomic status were found to be associated with subsequent HTPs use among ever smokers. Further studies are required to explore whether this association is causal
The Association between Community Water Fluoridation and Bone Diseases
The present study aimed to investigate the association between bone diseases and community water fluoridation (CWF). An ecological study with a natural experiment design was conducted in Cheongju, South Korea, from 1 January 2004 to 31 December 2013. The community water fluoridation program was implemented in Cheongju and divided into CWF and non-CWF areas. To observe adverse health effects related to bone diseases, we conducted a spatio-temporal…
Space–Time Relationship between Short-Term Exposure to Fine and Coarse Particles and Mortality in a Nationwide Analysis of Korea
Previous studies have shown an association between mortality and ambient air pollution in South Korea. However, these studies may have been subject to bias, as they lacked adjustment for spatio-temporal structures. This paper addresses this research gap by examining the association between air pollution and cause-specific mortality in South Korea between 2012 and 2015 using a two-stage Bayesian spatio-temporal model. We used 2012-2014 mortality a…
The Epidemiological Influence of Climatic Factors on Shigellosis Incidence Rates in Korea
Research has shown the effects of climatic factors on shigellosis; however, no previous study has evaluated climatic effects in regions with a winter seasonality of shigellosis incidence. We examined the effects of temperature and precipitation on shigellosis incidence in Korea from 2002−2010. The incidence of shigellosis was calculated based on data from the Korean Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC, Cheongju, Korea), and a generali…
Reanalysis of Epidemiological Investigation of Cancer Risk among People Residing near Nuclear Power Plants in South Korea
Background : A 20-year follow-up study on cancer incidence among people living near nuclear power plants in South Korea ended in 2011 with a finding of significantly, but inconsistently, elevated thyroid cancer risk for females. Reanalysis of the original study was carried out to examine the dose-response relationship further, and to investigate any evidence of detection bias. Methods : In addition to replicating the original Cox proportional haz…
Geographical Correlations between Indoor Radon Concentration and Risks of Lung Cancer, Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, and Leukemia during 1999–2008 in Korea
Indoor radon is the second most important risk factor for lung cancer and may also be a risk factor for hematopoietic cancers, particularly in children and adolescents. The present study measured indoor radon concentration nationwide at 5553 points during 1989-2009 and spatially interpolated using lognormal kriging. The incidences of lung cancer, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), and leukemia, stratified by sex and five-year age groups in each of the…
Tobacco and epidemiology in Korea
The National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) of Korea provides health insurance for over 90% of the population. The prevalence of smoking among Korean men is one of the highest in developed countries, and cancer incidence and mortality rates are the highest among all Asian countries.1 The NHIS has taken legal action against Korean and international tobacco companies and recently suffered a blow at the Supreme Court.2 This has attracted comment in…
Disparities in Children’s Blood Lead and Mercury Levels According to Community and Individual Socioeconomic Positions
We aimed to examine the associations between blood lead and mercury levels and individual and community level socioeconomic positions (SEPs) in school-aged children. A longitudinal cohort study was performed in 33 elementary schools in 10 cities in Korea. Among a total of 6094 children included at baseline, the final study population, 2281 children followed-up biennially, were analyzed. The geometric mean (GM) levels of blood lead were 1.73 μg/dL…
Cancer Risk in Diagnostic Radiation Workers in Korea from 1996–2002
This study was aimed to examine the association between the effective radiation dose of diagnostic radiation workers in Korea and their risk for cancer. A total of 36,394 diagnostic radiation workers (159,189 person-years) were included in this study; the effective dose and cancer incidence were analyzed between the period 1996 and 2002. Median (range) follow-up time was 5.5 (0.04-7) years in males and 3.75 (0.04-7) years in females. Cancer risk …
Contribution of income-related inequality and healthcare utilisation to survival in cancers of the lung, liver, stomach and colon
OBJECTIVES: To examine differences in the survival rates of cancer patients according to socioeconomic status, focusing on the role of the degree of healthcare utilisation by the patient. METHODS: An observational follow-up study was done for 261 lung cancer, 259 liver cancer, 268 stomach cancer and 270 colon cancer patients, diagnosed during 1999-2002. Income status and healthcare utilisation were assessed with National Health Insurance (NHI) da…
Structural and Individual Covariates of English Language Proficiency
This study evaluates the empirical merits of a multilevel model of English language proficiency among immigrants. The model represents a synthesis of Blau's theory of intergroup relations and the human capital model. Hypotheses derived from the model were tested using multilevel ordinal logistic analysis with individual and aggregate data from the 2000 U.S. Census for members of 20 non-English language groups. The results lent strong support to p…
Seasonal variation of effect of air pollution on blood pressure
Background: Many studies have shown a consistent association between ambient air pollution and an increase in death due to cardiovascular causes. An increase in blood pressure is a common risk factor for a variety of cardiovascular diseases. However, the association between air pollution and blood pressure has not been evaluated extensively. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we measured blood pressure in 10 459 subjects who had a health exa…
