  • The Transition-Age Youth Special Interest Group

Open Access•Colleen C Katz, M Sebrena Jackson et al.•ARTICLE•Families in Society The Journal…•2026

This paper provides an overview of the history and current activities of a group of researchers focused on the experiences of young people who “age out” of foster care in the United States. These transition-age youth (TAY) often have intersecting marginalized identities, as youth of color, queer youth, and youth with disabilities are disproportionately represented in care. Members of the Transition-Age Youth Special Interest Group (TAY-SIG) condu…

  • Navigating Relationships With Birth Family After Aging Out of Foster Care

Open Access•Judy Havlicek, Holland et al.•ARTICLE•Families in Society The Journal…•2026

As young people age out of foster care, many seek out their birth parents and extended families, but little is known about how these connections are navigated given past separations. Drawing from data previously collected from young people who aged out of foster care in a metropolitan area of one Western state ( n = 57), this study analyzed the responses from 53 young adults between the ages of 18 and 22 who answered two open-ended questions abou…

First, one agency completed a process mapping exercise to document VR referral practices. Second, agencies (N = 26) across the state completed surveys about knowledge and use of VR. Only 50% of agencies assessed employment needs at intake, and although 71% of agencies were familiar with the …

Judy Havlicek, Gina Miranda Samuels et al.•ARTICLE•Social Service Review•2018•Cited by: 16•References: 10

Foster youth advisory boards (YABs) are well known for their advocacy mission. Less is known about other benefits that may come from participation. This constructivist grounded theory study seeks to expand the conceptual understanding of one aspect of adolescent development and well-being—meaning-making around identity—among 33 current and former elected officers of the Illinois state foster youth advisory board. The findings suggest that the YAB…

To this end, we analyze the placement experiences of a sample of 2,542 adolescents entering residential care under the auspices of the Illinois Department of Child…

The median length of stay for children with ASD is 1.6 times longer than children without ASD. A latent class …

Drawing from official arrest records, event history models are used to examine the time to arrest. Because individuals may be at risk for different types of crime, competing risk regression models are used to distinguish among arrests for drug-related, nonviolent, or violent cri…
