If not now, then when? Social work educators, cis-supremacist legislation, and the question of professional obligation
The US is experiencing a wave of legislation seeking to limit the rights and autonomy of transgender and nonbinary (TNB) people across multiple domains, even attempting to cease the legal recognition of TNB people altogether. Social work is committed to social justice. However, the profession has been largely silent in the face of these legislative attacks. This article utilizes an anonymous survey to examine social work educators’ understanding …
A Descriptive Account of the Practicum Experiences of Trans and Nonbinary Social Work Students
Current anti-transgender legislative activity necessitates social workers take action in solidarity with transgender and nonbinary (TNB) individuals and communities. Pervasive discrimination and marginalization of TNB people across multiple public domains, including education, is irrefutable (James et al, 2016). Social work education is no exception. Part of…
Binary Thinking and the Limiting of Human Potential
Our society compresses a multitude of human identities into arbitrary categories, many of which are constructed as binaries. Binary constructs offer two mutually exclusive, possible ways of being. Perhaps the most prevalent in US society is the gender binary – the pervasive idea that there are two, rigidly boundaried gender categories, each with an accompanying set of expectations. Binary gender classifications are a foundational element of US so…
Sex Positive Social Work Education
Sexuality is an integral part of human behavior throughout the lifespan, with sexual health and well-being having an important impact on overall health and well-being, including increased life satisfaction and improved quality of relationships. As such, social workers encounter issues related to sexuality in all aspects of practice. However, very limited content on sexuality, especially positive sexuality, is included in the social work core curr…

Reviving a Positive Discourse on Sexuality within Social Work
Sexuality is not an invisible dimension within social work. Social workers are constantly engaged with aspects of sexuality across virtually all practice domains. Indeed, some of the most fundamental and frequent concerns of social workers involve sexual abuse, sexual violence, and HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. However, conversations about healthy sexuality, positive sexuality, or sexual well-being that are well ensconced in many…
