  • The Relationship among Income, other Socioeconomic Indicators, and Functional Level in Older Persons

Open Access•Cathy Berkman, Cathy S Berkman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging and Health•1998•Cited by: 25•References: 3

Socioeconomic status (SES) is well established as a cause of morbidity and mortality, but relatively few studies have investigated the relationship between SES and functional level. Functional level is closely related to the use of long-term care services and is a more salient indicator of quality of life than specific diseases. We used data from 1,570 respondents in the Growing Older in New York City Study, a probability sample of people age 65 …

  • The relationship between ethnoracial group and functional level in older persons

    Cathy Berkman, Cathy S Berkman et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity and Health•1998•Cited by: 3•References: 1

The objective of this study was to determine: (1) the differences between blacks, Latinos, and whites in relation to functional level, (2) whether these differences could be entirely explained by differences in socioeconomic status (SES) for both blacks and Latinos, and (3) which SES indicators might account for differences in function. Data from the 1570 respondents in the Growing Older in New York City Study, a representative sample of black, L…

    Cathy Berkman, C S Berkman et al.•ARTICLE•Social Work•1997•Cited by: 83•References: 17

Evidence suggests that social workers may be biased when dealing with gay and lesbian populations. The study discussed in this article attempted to measure the extent of homophobia and heterosexist bias and their correlates in a cohort of 187 social workers using the Index of Attitudes toward Homosexuality, the Attitudes toward Lesbians and Gay Men Scales, and a newly created scale to measure heterosexist bias. We found that 10 percent of respond…

Lisa F Berkman, Lisa Berkman et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Epidemiology•1986

The associations between depressive symptoms and functional disability and chronic conditions are examined in an elderly cohort of 2,806 noninstitutionalized men and women living in New Haven, Connecticut who were interviewed in 1982 as a part of the Yale Health and Aging Project. The aim is to explore several potential sources of invalidity in using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression scale (CES-D) to measure depressive symptoms in e…
