    Open Access•Nathaniel Elkins‐Brown, Stephen James et al.•ARTICLE•Criminology & Public Policy•2023•References: 4

Objectives This study aimed to validate a tool for coding police body‐worn camera (BWC) footage to measure the dynamics of police–community encounters, including items related to community members, officer performance, and situational outcomes. Methods Over 1000 BWC videos were scored by five coders who participated in an iterative interrater reliability exercise to improve the agreement. Krippendorf's alphas and a multilevel simultaneous compone…

  • Stevie Smith and Her Dancing Girls

    Stephen James•ARTICLE•Women a Cultural Review•2018

What constitutes a good Stevie Smith poem? The question bothered the author herself and it can bedevil the reader too, with evaluative quandaries often compounding interpretive ones. Smith’s uncertainty about the relative merits of her poems informed publication decisions, and this in turn has resulted in certain compositions being overlooked in critical assessments of her achievement. This article takes as a test-case example a hitherto largely …

  • The Reverse Racism Effect

    Open Access•Lois James, Stephen James et al.•ARTICLE•Criminology & Public Policy•2016•Cited by: 26•References: 2

Research Summary Race‐related debates often assume that implicit racial bias will result in racially biased decisions to shoot. Previous research has examined racial bias in police decisions by pressing “shoot” or “don't‐shoot” buttons in response to pictures of armed and unarmed suspects. As a result of its lack of external validity, however, this methodology provides limited insight into officer behavior in the field. In response, we conducted …

  • Researching law enforcement and public health

    Maurice Punch, S P James et al.•ARTICLE•Policing & Society•2016•Cited by: 7•References: 1

Academic and practitioner attention to law enforcement and public health/LEPH is relatively new. Its seemingly fresh promise can convey a picture of smart, joined-up and reflective inter-agency cooperation to assist the vulnerable and to support victims. But arriving at and establishing cooperation between the two worlds has been a prolonged and even vacillating process, while continuity may now be endangered. This Special Edition interrogates LE…

  • Excavations on the site of the Great Western Steamship Company’s Engine Works, Bristol

Chris Ellis, Matt Leivers et al.•ARTICLE•Post-Medieval Archaeology•2013•Cited by: 1

Archaeological investigations on the site of the former Great Western Steamship Company’s Engine Works (1839–52) at the Great Western Dockyard, Bristol have revealed elements of the world’s first purpose-built integrated iron steamship works, created specifically to build Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s iron-hulled SS Great Britain. Its innovative engine and transmission gear were made in the Engine Works, a building of monumental design which demonstr…

  • The Big Switch

    Stephen James•ARTICLE•Journal of Bisexuality•2005

A British male cross-dresser confronts the split in his personality between a male persona who desires women and a female persona who desires men. Intersections of gender identity, sexual orientation, and community politics complicate the author's self-understanding despite the clarity of his multiple desires. • ‘… The old stone fortt at Newcastle …’ The Redoubt, Nevis, eastern Caribbean

Elaine L Morris, Elaine Morris et al.•ARTICLE•Post-Medieval Archaeology•1999

The impending destruction of a small, crenellated stone fortification of 17th-century English construction located on the coast of the Caribbean island of Nevis prompted its preservation by record. Each interior and exterior elevation has been recorded by scaled drawings and photographs. Limited excavation of the interior revealed that there had been a mortared floor which continued through the only doorway, unusually located to face the sea. Doc…

  • God, Mammon and Mussolini

Open Access•Stephen James, Stephen A James•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Politics &…•1991

Twelve months ago the suggestion that Australia needed a Dictator was received with a tolerant smile. A Mussolini might suit the Latin psychology but the Australian sentiment would not stand for one. Today a large number of persons representing every side of our civic and commercial life agree that the suggestion is a sound one. The only question is “Who is the man?‘
