Stable Trust in Chaotic Times
A body of research has explored trust in the media, yet the reasons behind its stability in times of crisis remain unclear. This study examines whether stable trust in public service media (PSM) reflects continuity in the selected drivers of the trust or whether crises alter these effects, with some factors enhancing trust and others diminishing it, effectively balancing each other out. Using the Processing of Commercial Media Content (PCMC) model, we investigated the impact of advertising on the perceived credibility of informational content concerning fitness (in boys) and dietary supplements (in girls). METHODS: In a survey-based preregistered experiment, 681 Czech adolescents (aged 13-18, 52% girls) were rand…

The paper builds on data from 27 semi-structured interviews and a survey conducted in 2019-20 (N=3251). While for some, Czech television is a trustworthy medium protecting …
Just a “Mouthpiece of Biased Elites?” Populist Party Sympathizers and Trust in Czech Public Service Media
Existing research indicates that people with populist attitudes express lower trust in media, especially in Public Service Media. It is assumed that these people are alienated because of their values: populist ideology stems from anti-pluralism whereas Public Service Media promotes pluralism. This study tests this assumption by comparing the predictors of trust in Public Service Media between the populist party sympathizers and the sympathizers o…
Youtubing as the Construction, Destruction and Restoration of Privacy
The study focuses on privacy in online social networks. It presents an empirical analysis of youtubers, a group that has not yet been studied in the Czech social sciences. Using interpretive phenomenological analysis and in-depth interviews, we show that there is a typical 'career' trajectory that youtubers proceed along, whose structure is determined by experiences of breach of privacy and by mechanisms of reparation. These mechanisms and practi…
