Nowhere in Her Homeland
While there is a wealth of research on Assia Djebar’s francophone texts, including their translation into other languages, there are very few studies looking into how these texts have fared in Arabic translation. To address this gap, this article first investigates the reception of Assia Djebar’s oeuvre in the Arabic literary field by drawing on Petra Broomans and Esther Jiresch’s model of cultural transfer. Adopting Kinga Klaudy and Pál Heltai’s…
From Loquaimat to Munchies Cultural Erasure in the Translation of Emirati Children’s Literature
Despite the growing body of scholarship on the translation of children’s literature from English into Arabic, little attention has been given to the translation of Arabic children’s literature into English. To address this gap, this article examines the English translation of Emirati children's book حين يشتهي الجمل اللقيمات, by Maitha Al Khayat, published as When a Camel Gets the Munchies. Drawing on Venuti’s ethics of difference and Newmark’s ca…

Rewriting Women in the Qur’an
The aim of this study is to investigate how Shabbir Ahmed’s English rendering of selected verses from Surah al-Aḥzāb reshapes the portrayal of women. Drawing on Fairclough’s three-dimensional model and Lefevere’s theory of translation as rewriting, the analysis demonstrates that Ahmed’s textual and discursive strategies introduce shifts that bring women’s visibility, qualities, agency, and equality to the forefront. This portrayal aligns with fem…

Images of the Qur’an in Western scholarship
Despite the huge body of research that has developed around the Qur’an in the West, there is still a dearth of research on how this scholarship represents the Qur’an and could contribute to feeding dominant narratives about Islam and Muslims in the West. To fill this gap, and drawing on socio-narrative theory, the present article analyzes the textual choices made in two works published in the well-established journal Arabica: Journal of Arabic an…
Colonialism and race in Arabic translation
Despite the Arab world’s long experience with colonialism and racial and ethnic othering, there is a dearth of research on issues of colonialism and othering in Arabic literary translation. To fill this gap, and drawing on critical discourse analysis (CDA), specifically Norman Fairclough’s (Citation1992) three-dimensional analytical model, the present article analyzes the Arabic translation of Joseph Conrad’s novella, Heart of Darkness, by Harb S…
