Toward a Conceptual Model of Academic Translation Competence
Different cultures have distinct conceptions of knowledge and ways of defining, generating and communicating knowledge. Therefore, multilingualism in academia has been shown to be instrumental in preserving the various systems of knowledge, equality of opportunity in science and enhancing the international competitiveness of scholars whose native language is not the lingua franca. The actors of translation and the strategies they work with (domes…
Across 20 Years
This article offers an overview of the birth and the publication output of Across Languages and Cultures: A Multidisciplinary Journal for Translation and Interpreting Studies spanning the period between 2000 and the present day. It presents the circumstances and the aims of its creation and, based on the results of a thorough bibliometric analysis, it reveals how the journal has evolved into a Q1 international journal of Translation Studies throu…
Logical relations in translation
This study focuses on the (re)creation of logical structure in translation. While their crucial role in the cognitive processing of discourse is indisputable, we know little about the actual behaviour of logical relations in translation and the way in which they structure discourse linearly and hierarchically. By applying Halliday and Matthiessenr’s taxonomy to the analysis of (linear) conjunctive cohesive structure and Mann and Thompson’s Rhetor…
Cohesion and news translation
This study explores the (re)creation of cohesion in the English translations of Hungarian news stories. It reveals the quantity and quality of shifts of cohesion and the extent to which these are influenced by the differences between the languages, the stereotypical features of the kind of translation (news translation) and the genre (news story). Results indicate no significant quantitative shifts in translation; the in-depth analysis of the cor…
News Discourse in Translation
Topical structure in news translation has received relatively little attention despite its stated significance in discourse content and in producing functionally adequate translations. Journalists write news stories with a given structure, order, viewpoint and values, which are “transferred” in translation and affect the way topics are organized. This study explores how shifts in topical development in translation influence rhetorical structure a…
Author identity in English academic discourse
This paper investigates the expression of authorial identity in English published research articles and Hungarian EFL students’ MA theses written in English. Based on the analysis of a computer corpus of 100 research papers in applied linguistics, it compares the frequency of one indication of author identity, author pronouns, and the rhetorical functions for which these pronouns are used in the two corpora. Frequency counts show that student wri…

Implicitation in Translation
This study focuses on the notions of explicitation and implicitation in translation and aims to provide empirical evidence for operational asymmetry (Klaudy 2001). Bi-directional (SL=L1→TL=L2 and SL=L2→TL=L1) comparisons show that when explicitation takes place in the L1→L2 direction, implicitation can be observed in the L2→L1 direction. This phenomenon is referred to as symmetric explicitation. It may also happen, however, that when explicitatio…
Conference Reports Gender and Literary Translation. International Symposium. The University of East Anglia, Norwich, United Kingdom, 17-19 December, 1999
The link between gender issues and translation in recent years has developed into an intertwining of theory and practice. For instance, feminist writing has given a deep insight into the questions of how to translate from one culture to another the issues at stake; new attention to traditionally neglected historical subjects has led us to consider the role women played in the past in all the proc-esses involved with translation (a role often hidd…
