  • Computer‐Assisted Language Learning and Machine Translation

    Open Access•Harold Somers•CHAPTER•Encyclopedia of Applied Linguistics•2012

Machine translation (MT) is the oldest application of what is sometimes called “language engineering,” and has been around for over 60 years. While not fulfilling the early promise of “fully automatic high‐quality translation of unrestricted texts,” the technology has now reached a stability and a maturity, where developers and experienced users well understand the capabilities and limitations, and, in general, present these honestly to the gener…

  • Further Experiments in Bilingual Text Alignment

    Harold Somers•ARTICLE•International Journal of Corpus…•1998

We describe and experimentally evaluate an alternative algorithm for aligning and extracting vocabulary from parallel texts using recency vectors and a similarity measure based on Levenshtein distance. The work is largely inspired by Fung and McKeown 's DK-vec, though we use a simpler algorithm. The technique is tested on two sets of parallel corpora involving English, French, German, Dutch, Spanish, and Japanese. We attempt to evaluate the impor…
