  • Transmitting format, content and practices in early newspaper translation in Finland. ‘Tales from the Eastern Lands’ as a case in point

    Open Access•Outi Paloposki•ARTICLE•Perspectives•2026

Newspapers were part of the emergent translation culture in Finland at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, enabling circulation of ideas, providing material for translation, and offering novice translators concrete models and practices. Translated content in newspapers and journals tells us about these practices, such as the search for source texts, and textual and paratextual strategies. The article examines the case of The Thousand and One…

  • Translations not in the making? Rejections, disruptions and impasses in translator–publisher correspondence

    Open Access•Outi Paloposki•ARTICLE•Meta Journal des traducteurs•2021•References: 19

This is a study of a frequently occurring but seldom studied phenomenon: that of proposed translations, rejections and disruptions in translators’ work. The study is based on the correspondence of 64 translators in the archive of the Werner Söderström (WSOY) publishing house in Finland between the 1880s and the 1940s. It deals with around 180 translator suggestions and an almost equal number of rejections discovered in translator–publisher corres…

  • New Directions for retranslations research

Discu…

  • Tauchnitz for Translators. The Circulation of English-language Literature in Finland

    Open Access•Outi Paloposki•ARTICLE•Comparative Critical Studies•2019•References: 1

The article looks at book production and circulation from the point of view of translators, who, as purchasers and readers of foreign-language books, are an important mediating force in the selection of literature for translation. Taking the German publisher Tauchnitz's series ‘Collection of British Authors’ and its circulation in Finland in the nineteenth and early twentieth century as a case in point, the article argues that the increased avail…

  • Reprocessing texts. The fine line between retranslating and revising

Outi Paloposki, Kaisa Koskinen•ARTICLE•Across Languages and Cultures•2010

Retranslations are a frequent object of study in Translation Studies. They can be used as data for a number of research problems, or retranslation can be studied as a phenomenon on its own. There are no large-scale surveys on retranslation, however, let alone surveys that would be coupled with in-depth case studies, no doubt due to the laboriousness and complexity of the task. Our own interest in the issue started from a small-scale project testi…
