Effect of conservation treatments on radiocarbon ages of wood
The efficiency of the standard radiocarbon pretreatment in removing contamination from carbon introduced by wood conservation treatments was tested. Seven consolidated waterlogged wood samples from well-dated archaeological sites in Switzerland were chosen for preparation and AMS analysis. Conservation material included materials frequently used in the second half of the 20th century such as Arigal C, Polyethylene glycol, Ethanol-Ether, and sucro…

Migrazioni, sindacalismo e autorganizzazione nelle campagne
What Happened at Augland? A Social Chronology for the Demise of a Roman Iron Age Ceramic Workshop in South Norway
The unique ceramic production site at Augland in southernmost Norway thrived for more than 250 years until its demise in the troubled Migration Period. Contrary to previous opinions, we argue that production ended around AD 450–460 and not in the sixth century. Our approach, based on the craft practices, reveals that the introduction of a novel technology accelerated the process, fuelled by a regional power shift that severed once‐resilient ties …
Forgetting Dido
Forgetting Dido:A Note on the Decameron, Introduction to Day Four Francesco Caruso (bio) "Cacciata aveva il sole del cielo già ogni stella e della terra l'umida ombra della notte, quando Filostrato levatosi tutta la sua brigata fece levare" (Dec. 4.intro.44)—so concludes the narrator's introduction to the fourth day of Giovanni Boccaccio's Decameron, devoted to "coloro li cui amori ebbero infelice fine." As a source, commentators indicate the Ver…
Physico-Chemical Characterization of the Acqualadrone Rostrum
The archaeological discovery of the Acqualadrone rostrum (an offensive naval weapon mounted on the prow at the waterline), off the Italian coast near Messina in 2008, has led to the need for scientific research in order to plan the conservation treatment of this artefact. The discovery is exceptional because of the presence of a wooden section from the original ship. This paper describes the physico-chemical characterization of a metallic and two…
Machiavelli (review)
Reviewed by: Machiavelli Francesco Caruso Francesco Bausi. Machiavelli. Roma: Salerno, 2005. 407 pages. Mythology turns into philology in the last book that Francesco Bausi has devoted to Machiavelli. Fueled over the years by a mammoth bibliography rivaled solely by that on Dante, the myth of the Florentine secretary has been grounded on the fertile soil of his (alleged) philosophical depth, vast humanistic background, and unshakable republicanis…
