  • German in Belgium

Peter H Nelde, Peter Nelde et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Multilingual and…•2002•Cited by: 2

In this paper the situation of the German minorities in Old and New Belgium is presented. Following some geographical notes, the process of federalisation and its repercussions for East Belgium are briefly described. A discussion of linguistic factors vis-à-vis these minorities located along the Germanic-Romance linguistic border then follows and will lead on to the central part of the article. For methodological reasons this is divided into one …

  • Identity among bilinguals

    Peter H Nelde•ARTICLE•Sociolinguistic Studies•2000•Cited by: 1

Identity building among speakers of 'lesser used languages' is, in many aspects, incomparable among european minority groups, since many differing research approaches characterize the ethnolinguistic and cultural identities of minorities. In the same way, as contact linguistics by means of the Euromosaic report has revealed, there are several entirely different european language policies within the EU, and as a consequence, the identity of minori…

  • Prerequisites for a New European Language Policy

Peter H Nelde, Peter Nelde•ARTICLE•Journal of Multilingual and…•2000

In light of the parlous state of many of the minority languages within the European Union, there are numerous policy imperatives and implications that need to be urgently addressed in relation to the further development of European language policy. This paper outlines briefly what these might involve by highlighting key principles, and discussing these principally from a contact linguistics perspective

  • The principles of territoriality and personality in the solution of linguistic conflicts

Peter H Nelde, Normand Labrie et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Multilingual and…•1992•Cited by: 7•References: 10

This paper examines the competing principles of territoriality and personality as key concepts in the provision of language‐related services and rights in multilingual societies. Drawing on recent legislative and sociopolitical change in Belgium, Quebec and Canada we examine to what extent the adoption of such principles actually increases or neutralises language‐related conflict. We argue that sensitive application of certain territorially‐deriv…

  • Ecological aspects of language contact or how to investigate linguistic minorities

    Peter H Nelde•ARTICLE•Journal of Multilingual and…•1989•Cited by: 1•References: 4

This contribution concerns minorities in danger of losing their languages in quite distinct sociolinguistic situations. This description of the contact linguistic background in three areas of ‘Old Belgium’ gives credence to the assumption that an ecological approach is of prime importance in the analysis of linguistic/ethnic contact areas in which one or more languages or varieties are in danger of dying out. At the same time, the contribution re…

  • Language contact means language conflict

    Peter H Nelde•ARTICLE•Journal of Multilingual and…•1987•Cited by: 6•References: 4

Conflict plays a role in many social sciences. Linguistically, conflict between different ethnic groups often results from language contact. Problems viewed as political, economic or sociological in nature are often actually rooted in linguistic conflict. In the literature, however, contact has overshadowed conflict. In addition, the emphasis in contact research has traditionally focussed on closed, homogeneous groups rather than on urban industr…

  • Deutsche Minderheiten und ihre Sprache in Europa

    Peter H Nelde•ARTICLE•Language Problems & Language…•1984

German Minorities and Their Language in Europe Research in contact-linguistics in the last few years has particularly focused on a language that has always been prone to contact with others, namely, German. For this reason, the German language deserves special attention in the study of language-contact phenomena. Not only does it serve as a language of communication between East and West—a large amount of literature has already been produced on t…

  • Language ‘contact universals’ along the Germanic‐Romanic linguistic border

    Peter H Nelde•ARTICLE•Journal of Multilingual and…•1981•Cited by: 5•References: 2

At the centre of contact‐linguistic research in Europe at present are those language‐conflict zones where it will be shown whether a typology of language contacts can be formed at all, or whether inner‐ and outer‐linguistic universals dependent on contact can be worked out. A broad empirical basis would be a necessary requirement for this. The language frontier and transitional zones along the Germanic‐Romanic linguistic border occupy a particula…
