  • An Imperfect Pairing

    Open Access•Darren J N Middleton•ARTICLE•Postscripts The Journal of Sacred…•2025

Trained in Christian theology, religious studies, and literary theory in three British universities, I have taught an iteration of my Bible course in three US faith-based colleges and schools for over thirty years. I am lost without an annotated Bible and an eye for honest doubt. Each semester I have required my undergraduate students to read several biblical texts, stories with which they are probably familiar. But here, we begin to explore them…

  • Louis de Wohl

    Open Access•Darren J N Middleton•ARTICLE•New Blackfriars•2023

Using files declassified and released to Great Britain's National Archives, this article shows how Britain's domestic spy agency, MI5, recruited Louis de Wohl (1903-61), a flashy Hungarian astrologer and Christian writer to create horoscopes for Adolf Hitler during World War II. De Wohl was a controversial figure. His origin story does not check out. His MI5 handlers found him showy. And recent journalists dismiss him as a ‘persuasive fake’. Yet …

  • As It Is in Zion

    Darren J N Middleton, Darren Middleton•ARTICLE•Black Theology•2006

Based on the author's ethnographic fieldwork in Ghana in 2000 and 2001, this essay highlights the endlessly changing nature of Rastafarian faith and practice in this West African country. Here we see that Rastas in different Ghanaian communities seem to hold distinct and frequently conflicting beliefs in three major areas: Haile Selassie's divinity, Ethiopia's significance, and involvement in Ghanaian politics. Differences among Rastas in Ghana a…

  • Kazantzakis among the postmoderns

    Open Access•Darren J N Middleton•ARTICLE•Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies•2005•Cited by: 1

Following Friedrich Nietzsche, Nikos Kazantzakis gives mythopoetic embodiment to a way of looking at life that anticipates what we now see — attention to evolution, language, truth, perspective, and world enthusiasm — in various postmodern philosophies of religion. To show this alliance, my essay facilitates a broad but illuminating exchange between Kazantzakis and recent postmodern thinkers from around the western-oriented world: John Caputo (No…
