  • Stranded at a Distance”: The Symposium on Bombay-London-New York

    Open Access•Joseph W Childers•ARTICLE•Rethinking Marxism•2005

“Stranded at a Distance” responds to Amitava Kumar's Bombay-London-New York by asking readers to consider the elegance and nuances of the prose as well as subtlety with which Kumar interrogates current postcolonial theories of representation, hybridity, and “home.” While Kumar's work refuses the facile essentializing that characterizes so much identity theory (either in its final moves or in its attacks), it also retains something of the humannes…

  • Of Prison Notebooks and the Restoration of an Archive

    Open Access•Joseph W Childers•ARTICLE•Rethinking Marxism•2005•Cited by: 1

This essay examines the ways in which Antonio Gramsci's work has become more accessible through the translations of the Prison Notebooks undertaken by Joseph Buttigieg. Since I am usually self-indulgent, but rarely self-reflective when it comes to pleasure, of any sort,…

  • Sources of Palacio Valdes' las Burbujas

    J Wesley Childers, Joseph W Childers•ARTICLE•Hispania•1958

Armando Palacio Vald&s' Las burbujas is a murder thriller in which the perpetrator of the perfect crime is finally brought to justice.* Although he opens his short story with a quotation from Emerson's essay Compensation, and although he gives Emerson credit for the philosophical thought of his story, the main sources for Las burbujas go back to antiquity. This paper will show that the principal narrative threads are found in variants of the anci…
