  • Attempting to Address Conditions of Poverty through an Inclusive Economic Approach in Alberta

Open Access•Bethan Kingsley, Kirstyn Morley et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian journal of nonprofit and…•2021•References: 6

This article responds to the call to alter current economic and social systems in light of COVID-19 by documenting initial efforts by a community-university partnership to build an inclusive economy. First, the effects of neoliberalism and oil ex- traction are examined to highlight the inequality that existed in Alberta long before the pandemic began. The paper then outlines four key areas of change: employment and training; social procurement an…

  • Making the Poor Free?

    S K Das•BOOK•Making the Poor Free?•2015

The aim of the book is to show how India’s Unique Identification Number (Aadhaar) will make the poor free. Although Aadhaar’s contribution to food security, employment generation, education, and public health is rather modest, it does create a platform for the financial inclusion of the poor. Through this platform, Aadhaar brings government subsidies to the poor directly in cash, and thus gives them the wherewithal to be consumers in the market. …

  • A review on the origin and spread of deleterious mutants of the β-globin gene in Indian populations

    Open Access•Swapan K Da, S K Das et al.•ARTICLE•HOMO•2001

  • Public Office, Private Interest

    S K Das, Shreyasee Das•BOOK•Public office, private interest•2001

This volume is about political corruption and the use of public office for private gain in India. A merit-based bureaucracy was launched in the nineteenth century to control corruption. This system with its pay structure that rewarded civil servants for honest effort was seen as the best solution to political corruption. It was based on the assumption that if merit was made the basis of administration, it would exclude private interest. However, …

  • A genetical study of the five tribal groups of Andhra Pradesh, India

Urmila Pingle, B N Mukherjee et al.•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Morphologie und…•1981

  • Genetic polymorphism analysis among nine endogamous population groups of Maharashtra, India

    Open Access•B N Mukherjee, K C Malhotra et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•1979

  • Genetic distance analysis among nine endogamous population groups of Maharashtra, India

    Open Access•B N Mukherjee, P P Majumder et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•1979•Cited by: 3•References: 7

  • Serological and biochemical investigations among five endogamous groups of Delhi, India

Open Access•S K Das, Swagatam Das et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1978

Phenotype and gene frequencies for four blood group systems (ABO, MN, Rh and P) and haptoglobin among five endogamous groups of Delhi, India, are reported. All the systems are polymorphic in all the population groups. The average heterozygosity per locus in high (in the range 48-52 per cent) for all the groups. The extent of genic variability among the groups in terms of net codon differences per locus has been studied; the heterogeneity within t…

  • Money Illusion and Balance-of-Payments Adjustment

J Carter Murphy, Sujit Das et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•1976•References: 1

Money illusion, taking the form of lagged price perceptions and viewed in a competitive general equilibrium context, is shown in this paper to reduce the change in a country's balance of payments attributable to a devaluation of given size. Illusion's effect on adjustment is also shown to be probably greater under flexible than under fixed exchange-rate arrangements. The results contrast with a view that illusion, in disguising real-income change…

  • The effect of parity on placental weight and birth weight

    Open Access•Ranajit Chakraborty, S R Das et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1975

The effect of parity on placental weight and birth weight is examined through a series of birth records from an Indian population in Calcutta. Placental weight and birth weight increase with parity, the maximum increment occurring between parities 1 and 2. This is compatible with a hypothesis of sensitization of the mother to foetal, paternally derived, antigens. The three common placental alkaline phosphatase enzymic genotypes have no effect on …

  • Caste variation in the distribution of placental alkaline phosphatase genes among the Hindus of West Bengal

    Open Access•S R Das, B N Mukherjee et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1974

798 placentas (Brahmin 141, Kayastha 303, Mahishya 91 and mixed low castes 263), from Calcutta hospitals, have been studied by starch gel electrophoresis for alkaline phosphatase types. The estimated gene-frequencies resemble those found else-where in caucasoid populations. Statistically significant differences (P approximately 0.02) were, however, noticed between the broadly divided upper caste group (Brahmin and Kayastha) and the lower caste gr…
