  • Pablo Neruda in Context

Open Access•Marjorie Agosin, Martín Camps et al.•BOOK•Pablo Neruda in Context•2026

Pablo Neruda in Context includes forty-two essays by some of the main experts on Pablo Neruda's oeuvre that focus on how his places of residence and travel (Mexico, Argentina, Spain, France, Asia), the landmark event of the Cold War, as well as literary and political influences affected his poetic evolution. It also considers the other genres of his writing, including memoirs, letters, translation, and drama, as well as the musical and film adapt…

  • Stimulus Payments and the Pandemic

Open Access•Daniel G Cooper, Daniel Cooper et al.•ARTICLE•Oxford Bulletin of Economics and…•2026

This paper evaluates the marginal propensity to consume out of the 2020 CARES Act stimulus payments using high‐frequency, transaction‐level data for a sample of low‐income prepaid debit cardholders. It finds that the spending response to these payments is similar on impact to the response to a temporary change in regular income, and only somewhat smaller cumulatively (65 cents vs. 75 cents, respectively, per dollar). The stimulus spending respons…

  • Intelligent data collection for reducing network structure uncertainty in material flow analysis using Bayesian optimal experimental design

Open Access•Jiankan Liao, Xun Huan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Industrial Ecology•2025

Material flow analyses (MFAs) are powerful tools for highlighting resource efficiency opportunities in supply chains. MFAs are often represented as directed graphs, with nodes denoting processes and edges representing mass flows. However, network structure uncertainty—uncertainty in the presence or absence of flows between nodes—is common and can compromise flow predictions. While collection of more MFA data can reduce network structure uncertain…

  • Bayesian model selection for network discrimination and risk‐informed decision‐making in material flow analysis

Open Access•Jiankan Liao, Sidi Deng et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Industrial Ecology•2025

Material flow analyses (MFAs) provide insight into supply chain‐level opportunities for resource efficiency. MFAs can be represented as networks with nodes that represent materials, processes, sectors, or locations. MFA network structure uncertainty (i.e., the existence or absence of flows between nodes) is pervasive and can undermine the reliability of the flow predictions. This article investigates MFA network structure uncertainty by proposing…

  • Expert elicitation and data noise learning for material flow analysis using Bayesian inference

Open Access•Jiayuan Dong, Jiankan Liao et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Industrial Ecology•2023

Bayesian inference allows the transparent communication and systematic updating of model uncertainty as new data become available. When applied to material flow analysis (MFA), however, Bayesian inference is undermined by the difficulty of defining proper priors for the MFA parameters and quantifying the noise in the collected data. We start to address these issues by first deriving and implementing an expert elicitation procedure suitable for ge…

  • The Effects of Changes in Local Bank Health on Household Consumption

Daniel G Cooper, Daniel Cooper et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2021

This study investigates the relationship between credit availability and household consumption using a novel approach to separate credit demand and supply. We find that a deterioration in local-bank health reduces household consumption, with the strongest effects occurring for households that are more likely to need credit—especially those experiencing a negative income shock and having limited liquid assets. The main contributions of the study a…

  • Prospective Environmental Analyses of Emerging Technology

    Open Access•Daniel Cooper, Timothy G Gutowski•ARTICLE•Journal of Industrial Ecology•2020

Prospective environmental assessment of emerging technology is necessary in order to inform designers of beneficial changes early in a technology's development, and policy makers looking to fund projects and nudge manufacturers toward the most sustainable application of a technology. Existing analyses often have shortcomings such as failing to consider the environmental impacts in all stages of a product's life cycle; implicitly assuming that the…

  • The Environmental Impacts of Reuse

Open Access•Daniel Cooper, Daniel R Cooper et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Industrial Ecology•2017

The fear that human consumption is causing climate change, biodiversity loss, and mineral scarcity has recently prompted interest in reuse because of the intuitive belief that it reduces new production and waste. The environmental impacts of reuse have, however, received little attention—the benefits typically assumed rather than understood—and consequently the overall effects remain unclear. In this article, we structure the current work on the …

  • Note on the Rate and Energy Efficiency Limits for Additive Manufacturing

Open Access•Timothy G Gutowski, Timothy Gutowski et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Industrial Ecology•2017

We review the process rates and energy intensities of various additive processing technologies and focus on recent progress in improving these metrics for laser powder bed fusion processing of metals, and filament and pellet extrusion processing of polymers and composites. Over the last decade, observed progress in raw build rates has been quite substantial, with laser metal processes improving by about 1 order of magnitude, and polymer extrusion…

  • Household Wealth Effects and the US Macroeconomy

Open Access•Karen E Dynan, Karen Dynan et al.•OTHER•Emerging Trends in the Social and…•2015

The effect of wealth on consumption is an issue of long‐standing interest to economists. Analysts believe that fluctuations in household wealth have driven major swings in economic activity. This essay considers the so‐called “wealth effects”—the impact of changes in wealth on household consumption and the overall macroeconomy. There is an extensive existing literature on wealth effects, but there are also many unanswered issues and questions. Th…

  • House price growth when children are teenagers

  • House Price Fluctuations

Daniel G Cooper, Daniel Cooper•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2013

Rising house prices affect household spending by either loosening a household's lifetime budget constraint (pure wealth effect) or the household's borrowing constraint so that consumption rises toward the level implied by the consumption Euler equation (borrowing collateral effect). The empirical findings in this paper are consistent with house price appreciation affecting household spending through the borrowing collateral channel and not the pu…
