A ḍamaru for Jagat-Candra: A historical musical instrument from Nepal
Historical musical instruments are rare in Nepal. So far, a few examples of ritual instruments associated with former rulers have been identified. A previously unpublished hour-glass-shaped pellet-drum (ḍamaru) from seventeenth-century Bhaktapur is of special interest because it bears inscriptions and representations of human figures that indicate the date and circumstances of its creation. Particularly significant are the name ‘Jagat-Candra’ – t…
Vitality and Sustainability of Traditional Music: Survey of Devotional Singing Groups (dāphā khalaḥ) in the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal
Dāphā bhajan is a participatory genre of Hindu-Buddhist devotional music, sung by groups of farmers and other Newar singers in the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal. It is deeply integrated with local neighbourhood communities, but owing to recent disasters (the 2015 earthquake, the 2020-2022 Covid-19 pandemic) and ongoing cultural changes, its sustainability is in doubt. In 2022-2023 the authors conducted a survey of selected groups to investigate the per…

Music, Meaning and Culture
This paper situates musical meaning in culture, addressing music as social symbol and as ongoing process of meaning creation. Three examples of non- Western musical practice are used to illustrate the embedding of musical meaning in cultural context. The performance of an Australian Aboriginal song is shown to exemplify the interdependence of song style and social structure as a matrix for the emergence of cultural meanings; an example of North I…

Festivals ofdhrupadin northern India: New contexts for an ancient art
Although dhrupad is believed to be the oldest and most sacred genre of North Indian vocal art‐music, its performance suffered a severe decline in the middle decades of the present century. In recent years, however, a revival of interest in the genre has occurred. Since 1975, festivals of dhrupad in Banaras, Vrindaban and other centres have provided a catalyst for revival, in the form of a context for dhrupad performance that respects the ideology…

The Ragas of Early Indian Music: Modes, Melodies and Musical Notation from the Gupta Period to c. 1250
The concept of raga, the traditional basis of melodic composition and improvisation in Indian classical music, has become familiar to listeners and musicologists throughout the world, but its historial origins and early development have been little explored. This book draws on written documents from the pre-Islamic period in India, including musical treatises (expecially that of the thirteenth-century theorist, Sarngadeva), literary works, and a …
