  • Does Public Engagement Have a Role in Biomedical Clinical Research

    Open Access•Rosamond Rhodes, Gary Ostertag•ARTICLE•Bioethics•2026

In this paper, we focus narrowly on the question of the relevance of public engagement in clinical research (PER). Over the past 20 years, demands for public engagement in research have grown dramatically in their number and scope. In the same period, we have also witnessed escalating attacks on expertise in general and science in particular. This paper responds to these developments. We draw on themes in John Rawls's Political Liberalism to make…

  • Language Models and Externalism

    Open Access•Gary Ostertag•ARTICLE•Computational Linguistics•2025

Do texts generated by language models (LMs) refer? Mandelkern and Linzen (2024) argue that externalist principles point to an affirmative conclusion. What grounds reference, according to their externalism, is a term’s “natural history”. For example, ‘water’ refers to H2O among English speakers, and not to the phenomenally indistinguishable chemical XYZ, because H2O, and not XYZ, is implicated in the natural history of ‘water’. Appealing to the li…

  • Disappearing Ink

    Eileen O''Neill, Gary Ostertag•EDITOR•BOOK•Disappearing Ink•2025

Eileen O'Neill's influence is almost single-handedly responsible for the entry of early modern women philosophers into the canon. Before the publication of her groundbreaking essay "Disappearing Ink: Early Modern Women Philosophers and the History of Philosophy," women philosophers of the early modern period were mentioned only in passing, if at all, in the various histories and anthologies of that period. The current volume presents O'Neill's es…

  • E. E. Constance Jones on the dualism of practical reason

Gary Ostertag, Amanda Favia•ARTICLE•British Journal for the History…•2021

    E. E. Constance Jones (1848–1922), a regular contributor to Mind and the Proceedings of the Aristotelian Society, and the author of several textbooks and a monograph, worked in both philosophical logic and ethics. The current paper focuses on Jones’ central contribution to ethics – her response to Sidgwick’s “dualism of practical reason”. Sidgwick held that practical reason has an allegiance to two distinct ‘methods’: self-love and benevolence. Y…

  • Meanings and Other Things

    Gary Ostertag•EDITOR•BOOK•Meanings and Other Things•2016

In 'Meanings and Other Things' 14 leading philosophers explore central themes in the writings of Stephen Schiffer, a leading figure in philosophy since the 1970s. Topics range from theories of meaning to moral cognitivism, the nature of paradox, and the problem of vagueness. Schiffer's responses set out his current thinking
