“But Who Eats the Mosquitos?”
Science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) education represents an array of fields that have significant promise for the future careers of students. However, in deaf education, little research has been conducted to understand how best to provide access to STEAM learning opportunities for deaf students. This manuscript explores STEAM learning and Deaf Education through the lens of translanguaging. Translanguaging is the use of…
Federal Enforcement and Black Political Representation
In this paper, we demonstrate that the federal enforcement of the 15th Amendment is necessary for Black representation in the U.S. South. Using novel data on Black officeholders in the South from 1866 to 1912 and from 1969 to 1993, we examine Black representation during Reconstruction and after the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. In both political periods, we find that policies aimed to enforce the 15th Amendment and active Black political…
Diachrony and Diachronica
Willing but Unable
In this article, we offer a framework for understanding the role that racial group consciousness (RGC) plays in influencing Black Americans' engagement in costly political action. Attempting to add clarity to decades of inconsistent and at times contradictory findings, we argue that the effect of RGC at inspiring political action among Black Americans is conditional on (1) the relevance of the political activity to achieving a well-recognized rac…
Linked fate over time and across generations
Linked fate and group consciousness have helped scholars explain and predict the political attitudes, participatory behavior, and policy preferences of people of color (see Gay, Hochschild, and Whi
The Printer's Grammar
The author of this 1755 work is unknown - John Smith may not even have been his real name - but internal evidence from the book suggests that he may have spent some time in northern Germany, and he also shows familiarity with aspects of French printing. Smith describes the typesetting of books but not the actual printing, so it is possible that he may have been a compositor or a printer's reader. The work is a comprehensive survey of all aspects …
Spillover Effects of an Uninsured Population
A lack of health insurance has long been associated with negative effects on individual and family health due to access barriers. However, we know little about how a lack of health insurance affects wider communities beyond health care. Based on in-depth interviews in two Los Angeles communities, we report how a lack of health insurance affects the functioning of religious institutions and schools from kindergarten to 12th grade. We find a negati…
The Boundaries of Pure Morphology
This book considers whether in some languages there are phenomena which are unique to morphology, determined neither by phonology or syntax. Central to these phenomena is the notion of the ‘morphome’, conceived by Mark Aronoff in 1994 as a function, itself lacking form and meaning but which serves systematically to relate them. The classic examples of morphomes are determined neither phonologically or morphosyntactically, and appear to be an auto…
The GDP Illusion
The 'GDP Illusion" is a fault in perception caused by defects in the construction and interpretation of standard economic data. Its main symptom is a systematic underestimation of the real contribution of low-wage workers in the global South to global wealth, and a corresponding exaggerated measure of the domestic product of the United States and other imperialist countries. These defects and distorted perceptions spring from the neoclassical con…
Morphological AutonomyPerspectives From Romance Inflectional Morphology
In the linguistic literature, paradigms have enjoyed a hybrid status, half‐way between entrenched patterns of lexical organization and processing structures enforcing global constraints on the output of traditional inflection rules. We describe here an original computational model of the mental lexicon where paradigmatic structures emerge through learning as the by‐product of the endogenous dynamics of lexical memorization as competitive self‐org…
Gothic Terms, Themes, Concepts and Contexts
Just as THE UNCANNY offers a connection to the structure of the unconscious, the abject offers a sensation of horror that connects us viscerally to the experience of repression and the process of subject formation. For Julia Kristeva, in Powers of Horror, abjection disturbs ‘identity, system, order’ and is characterised by ‘the in-between, the ambiguous, the composite’.

Historical Linguistics (Current Issues in Linguistic Theory)
What's Happened to Us? Some Developments in the Malay Pronoun System
We examine the development of the Austronesian first-person pronouns in nonstandard varieties of Malay/Indonesian. The fact that of the inclusive and exclusive pronouns only the form of the inclusive, * kita?, is ever retained in the nonsingular forms when the inclusive-exclusive distinction is lost, or extended to a singular meaning, is taken as a sign of an oppositional relationship being retained even after the functional basis for that opposi…

Linguistic Theory and the Romance Languages
This volume contains revised versions of papers given at a conference at the Manoir de Brion, in Normandy. They deal with phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics, and cover a wide range of Romance languages, including many lesser-known varieties. The contributors to the volume are committed to the view that Romance Linguistics is not narrowly philological, but is rather General Linguistics practised with reference to particular data. The poi…
