  • Involvement of older adults in shared decision-making on care transitions in the UK

Open Access•Lucia Halamová, Louise Locock et al.•ARTICLE•Ageing and Society•2025

The global population is ageing rapidly, emphasising the need to understand the decision-making processes of older adults regarding potential care transitions. Gerontological research has focused on healthcare decisions, with less information on living situation choices of older adults. This review explored older adults' experiences with their involvement in decision-making processes related to transitioning into care facilities in the United Kin…

  • Melissus And His Opponents

    Stephen Makin•ARTICLE•Phronesis•2005

In this paper I offer a new interpretation of Melissus' argument at DK 30 B8.In this passage Melissus uses an Eleatic argument against change to challenge an opponent who appeals to the authority of perception in order to support the view that there are a plurality of items in the world. I identify an orthodox type of approach to this passage, but argue that it cannot give a charitable interpretation of Melissus' strategy. In order to assess Meli…

  • Aristotle's Two Modal Theses Again

    Stephen Makin•ARTICLE•Phronesis•1999

This paper offers an interpretation of the arguments Aristotle offers in Metaphysics 9.4, 1047b14-30, for the two modal theses [1] if (if A is the case then B is the case) then (if A is possible then B is possible) [2] if (if A is possible then B is possible) then (if A is the case then B is the case) Aristotle's arguments for these theses have not typically impressed commentators. I offer two arguments which are relatively faithful to Aristotle'…

  • Aristotle on Unity and Being

    Open Access•Stephen Makin•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Cambridge…•1988

In this paper I will discuss what Aristotle has to say on the relation between τὸ ἕν and τὸ ὄν. Stated briefly the relation is that τὸ ἕν and τὸ ὄν are (a) transcendental predicates: each applies in all the categories; (b) convertible predicates: each implies the other and adds nothing to the other. For Met. 1003b23–4 claims that being and unity are one and the same thing in that they are implied in each other, τὸ ὂν καὶ τὸ ἕν ταὐτὸν καὶ μία φύσι…

  • How can we find out what Ancient Philosophers said

    Stephen Makin•ARTICLE•Phronesis•1988

The question I will discuss in this paper is: what role does the philosophical assessment of a view play in deciding whether to attribute that view to some previous philosophers? My particular interest, on which I will concentrate exclusively in this paper, is in pre-Socratic philosophy. For it is with preSocratic philosophy, more than any other area, that we are faced with the problem of limited and incomplete textual evidence. As a result we ha…

  • Zeno on Plurality

    Stephen Makin•ARTICLE•Phronesis•1982

In de Generatione et Corruptione A8 Aristotle presents the Atomic theory as due to reflection on the Eleatic view that what is is necessarily one and immovable (325a2: T'O 'EV 't v second, they should pose no threat to the Eleatic theory. Both these guides embody assumptions that might be challenged. As to the first, it might be doubted whether the Atomic theory was a reaction to Eleaticism; but for the purposes of this paper the first guide is t…
