Plato’s Statesman
In her introduction to a translation of the Statesman, Julia Annas remarks that as ‘stimulating as Plato’s political ideas in the Statesman are, it is not surprising that the dialogue has been relatively neglected by comparison with the Republic and the Laws’ (Annas and Waterfield 1995: x). A glance at Dimas et al.’s bibliography shows that the situation has improved since then, although the Statesman remains underdiscussed. Thus, the current vol…
Virtue, Happiness, Knowledge
This volume is a Festschrift for Gail Fine and Terence Irwin on their retirement from the University of Oxford and Cornell University. The honor is exceedingly well-deserved: Fine and Irwin are two of the leading ancient philosophers in the generation succeeding G. E. L. Owen and Gregory Vlastos. Their many publications have been of seminal influence in shaping the fields of ancient ethics, epistemology, and metaphysics. Their teaching has been j…
Nicomachean Ethics , VII. 7
On both Bekker ‘s and Didot ‘s chaptering, NE 1150a9 – 1150b28 constitutes a single chapter, VII. 8 for Bekker and VII. 7 for Didot; in this paper, I shall follow Didot. In any case, this chapter has attracted much less scholarly interest than book VII ‘s earlier chapters (or the later chapters on pleasure) and the extant discussions tend to see it as somewhat disjointed and confusing. Although I do not think that VII. 7 is as philosophically ric…

In the Republic , Plato partitions the soul and thus recognizes the existence of non-rational motivations that do not aim at what is best for the whole person overall. Plato’s theory in the Protagoras may be reminiscent of the claim that he makes about desire and the good in…
