  • Osteology of Gobiderma pulchrum (Monstersauria, Lepidosauria, Reptilia)

Open Access•Jack L Conrad, Olivier Rieppel et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the American Museum…•2011

Joint expeditions by the American Museum of Natural History and Mongolian Academy of Sciences have recovered significant new remains of the basal monstersaur Gobiderma pulchrum. We describe these new specimens in detail and also revisit the originally described material in order to more fully understand this pivotal anguimorph taxon. The newly discovered specimens include skull and postcranial materials that add dramatically to the understanding …

  • New Essentialism in Biology

    Open Access•Olivier Rieppel•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•2010•Cited by: 4•References: 53

The architects of the modern synthesis banned essentialism from evolutionary theory. This rejection of essentialism was motivated by Darwin's theory of natural selection, and the continuity of evolutionary transformation. Contemporary evolutionary biology witnesses a renaissance of essentialism in three contexts: “origin essentialism” with respect to species and supraspecific taxa, the bar coding of species on the basis of discontinuities of DNA …
