The Problem of the Missing Model
Missing-model problems are a type of problem that arises when scientists are trying to gain access to initially inaccessible phenomena. This paper describes what missing-model problems are, and examines examples of them from seismology, optics, and the theory of gases. It is argued that the examination of missing-model problems will give us a better understanding of the challenges scientists face when attempting to gain access. Two themes for the…

Narrative Science
Narrative Science examines the use of narrative in scientific research over the last two centuries. It brings together an international group of scholars who have engaged in intense collaboration to find and develop crucial cases of narrative in science. Motivated and coordinated by the Narrative Science project, funded by the European Research Council, this volume offers integrated and insightful essays examining cases that run the gamut from ge…

Reference Models
Reference models of the earth’s interior play an important role in the acquisition of knowledge about the earth’s interior and the earth as a whole. Such models are used as a sort of standard reference against which data are compared. I argue that the use of reference models merits more attention than it has gotten so far in the literature on models, for it is an example of a method of doing science that has a long and significant history, and a …
Underdetermination, Black Boxes, and Measurement
This article introduces the notion of a kind of inference called black box measurement and argues that it is both historically and philosophically significant. Thinking about certain classic cases of underdetermination using this notion can give us a better understanding of how these cases are resolved. I take the main philosophical problem of black box measurement to be the justification of assumptions that are needed in order to make these meas…
Isaac Newton’s Scientific Method
Perhaps no argument in the history of science has been scrutinized as much as that of Newton in Book 3 of the Principia. One might find it astonishing, then, that philosophers still have fundamental disagreements about how, exactly, the argument of Book 3 is supposed to work and what it establishes. What's the problem? If William Harper is right in his new book, Isaac Newton's Scientific Method: Turning Theory into Evidence about Gravity and Cosm…
