  • The question of negative temperatures in thermodynamics and statistical mechanics

    Open Access•David A Lavis•ARTICLE•Studies in History and Philosophy…•2019

  • The problem of equilibrium processes in thermodynamics

    Open Access•David A Lavis•ARTICLE•Studies in History and Philosophy…•2018

  • Boltzmann, Gibbs, and the Concept of Equilibrium

    Open Access•David A Lavis•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•2008•Cited by: 5•References: 2

The Boltzmann and Gibbs approaches to statistical mechanics have very different definitions of equilibrium and entropy. The problems associated with this are discussed, and it is suggested that they can be resolved, to produce a version of statistical mechanics incorporating both approaches, by redefining equilibrium not as a binary property (being/not being in equilibrium) but as a continuous property (degrees of equilibrium) measured by the Bol…

  • Boltzmann and Gibbs

    Open Access•David A Lavis•ARTICLE•Studies in History and Philosophy…•2005

  • Physics from Fisher information

    Open Access•David A Lavis, R F Streater•ARTICLE•Studies in History and Philosophy…•2002

  • The Work of E. T. Jaynes on Probability, Statistics and Statistical Physics

    David A Lavis, P J MILLIGAN•ARTICLE•The British Journal for the…•1985•Cited by: 2•References: 10

An important contribution to the foundations of probability theory, statistics and statistical physics has been made by E. T. Jaynes. The recent publication of his collected works provides an appropriate opportunity to attempt an assessment of this contribution.
