  • Living with the Fragments: Further Thoughts on Norman Geras’s Critique of Post-Marxism

    Jules Townshend•ARTICLE•International Critical Thought•2017•References: 2

This article revisits and re-evaluates a famous debate between Norman Geras and Ernesto Laclau. This exchange was one of the few direct confrontations between Marxism and post-Marxism in terms of its significance for the evolution of Marxist theory, characterised by increasing fragmentation often morphing into post-Marxist theory. The article also considers the significance of the debate in relation to the nature of Geras’s adherence to Marxism a…

  • Living with Capitalism: From Hobson to Giddens

    Open Access•Jules Townshend•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Politics…•2007•References: 7

Many commentators have noted the intellectual parallels between New Labour and New Liberalism without spelling them out in much detail. This article highlights these parallels through comparing the thoughts of J. A. Hobson, a key thinker within New Liberalism and British social democracy, and Anthony Giddens, the most prominent ‘Third Way’ thinker. Not only were there striking and surprising similarities, but their differences raise questions abo…

  • Laclau and Mouffe's Hegemonic Project: The Story So Far

    Open Access•Jules Townshend•ARTICLE•Political Studies•2004•Cited by: 25•References: 9

This paper seeks to do two things: first, to map out in a broad way Laclau and Mouffe's intellectual development, since the publication of Hegemony and Socialist Strategy in 1985, and how they have created a following within academia; and second, to evaluate their ‘hegemonic’ endeavours so far. I argue that there is a place for a post-structuralist approach to the study of political ideologies and the ‘political’, but that the project as a whole …

  • Derrida's deconstruction of Marx(ism)

    Jules Townshend•ARTICLE•Contemporary Politics•2004

This article is an assessment of the arguments between Derrida and his critics over his commentary on Marx and Marxism in Specters of Marx. In order to make the assessment as balanced as possible Derrida's deconstruction of Marx(ism) is mapped out in some detail. It is argued that, although in Derrida's response to his Marxist critics he was correct in indicating that they had often misread and misunderstood his account of what can be termed the …

  • Hobbes as Possessive Individualist: Interrogating the C. B. Macpherson thesis

    Jules Townshend•ARTICLE•Hobbes Studies•1999

52 Hobbes as Possessive Individualist: interro- gating the C. B. Macpherson thesis JULES TOWNSHEND If recent commentaries on Hobbes are anything to go by, C. B. Macpherson's analysis of Hobbes as a possessive individualist is virtually dead, maintaining a shadowy existence in the occasional dismissive footnote.' This is a far cry from when Macpherson's account of Hobbes appeared in The Political Theory of Possessive Individualism (hereafter PI in…

  • Lenin's The State and Revolution: An Innocent Reading

    Open Access•Jules Townshend•ARTICLE•Science & Society•1999•References: 4

    A. J. Polan's Weberian-inspired and seemingly persuasive critique of Lenin in Lenin and the End of Politics has gone unanswered. In the process of refuting Polan a critical defense of Lenin is offered. The general question is raised about what kind of Marxism is needed in the face of modernity in order to broaden the horizon of democratic possibility. This requires some kind of Marxist-Weberian synthesis that goes beyond liberal democracy

  • Marx and Veblen on Human Nature, History, and Capitalism: Vive la Différence!

Stephen Edgell, Jules Townshend•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Issues•1993

There has been a long-standing controversy over the relationship between Marx's and Veblen's social theories. At the turn of the century, within the covers of one journal one commentator claimed that major differences existed between Marx and Veblen, whereas another emphasized the Marxian character of Veblen's economic thought [Walling 1905; LaMont 1905]. A similar range of interpretations has persisted,' but the majority have concluded that Vebl…

  • John Hobson, Thorstein Veblen and the Phenomenon of Imperialism: Finance Capital, Patriotism and War

Open Access•Stephen Edgell, Jules Townshend•ARTICLE•American Journal of Economics and…•1992

Although Hobson (1858-1940) and Veblen (1857-1929) both wrote extensively on imperialism, a systematic comparison of their views has yet to be undertaken. This is corrected with reference to three issues: their respective condemnation and explanation of, and remedy for, imperialism. The contexts in which they wrote is outlined and it is shown that on the basis of a shared definition of imperialism: (1) they both condemned imperialism on economic …

  • A Mayor for Paris – An Early Example of Decentralization

    Open Access•Jules Townshend, J V TOWNSHEND•ARTICLE•Public Administration•1984•Cited by: 1•References: 1

This paper analyses the 1975 municipal reform which gave Paris its first elected Mayor since the days of the revolutionary Commune. Local government reform has proved notoriously difficult in France and the policy‐making process in this case was complicated by the political situation, following the death of President Pompidou, in April 1974. His successor, Giscard d'Estaing, attempted to marginalize the Gaullist Party and to govern from the centr…
