Boosted income, busted environment: A tradeoff in the wider economic impacts of transport corridor investments
The literature on the impacts of transport corridors points to a tradeoff between income and environmental quality. We estimate the impacts of India's Golden Quadrilateral and North-South-East-West highways on income and environmental quality to test this tradeoff hypothesis. Applying the difference-in-difference method to district level data, we find that the highways increased both local income and particulate matter air pollution. The estimate…
Late banking transitions: Comparing Uzbekistan to earlier reformers
This paper compares the early experience of Uzbekistan with transitioning its banking system to market principles with the experience of former transition economies. To that effect, it uses novel data on Uzbekistan’s banking sector, data on former transition economies, and evidence from the literature. We find that the 2017 financial liberalization triggered a larger credit boom than former transition countries experienced. The Covid-19 pandemic …

The wider economic benefits of transport corridors: A policy framework and illustrative application to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor
This article discusses a new policy framework to appraise proposals of large transport infrastructure investments—transport corridors—and applies it to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The framework emphasises the need to focus appraisal on the ultimate benefits that households along a corridor and, more generally, society, can attain—such as increased consumption, better jobs and greater equity. It also emphasises the need to identif…
Non-Performing Loans and The Macroeconomy: Modeling the Systemic Credit Risk in the Czech Republic
Aggregate non-performing loans are the loans of a banking sector with delayed payments. This paper examines how aggregate non-performing loans (NPLs), as an indicator of aggregate credit risk, respond to macroeconomic developments in the Czech Republic. It uses data for the period 1993-2014 and the Bayesian estimation method of instrumental variables. This method exploits a priori information from similar studies for other countries and considers…
The Impact of Macroeconomic Shocks on the Government Debt Dynamics: How Robust is the Fiscal Stance of the Czech Republic
This paper analyzes the effects of macroeconomic shocks on the government debt dynamics in an open economy using the analytical framework of Favero and Giavazzi (2007) extended to an open economy. Applying this modelling approach to the data for the Czech Republic, the authors derive some implications for fiscal policy. The modelling framework includes structural vector autoregression (SVAR) model, estimated using short-term identification restri…
