Personality Correlates of Extent versus Type of Antisocial Behavior among Adult Offenders
The performance of 250 adult male offenders on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) was analyzed in relation to extent of known lifetime criminal involvement versus type of most recent offense. Although the set of personality measures was sensitive to both indices of illegal behavior, offense-type groups were discriminable only by virtue of their differing levels of recidivism. Nevertheless, MMPI scores were meaningfully related…
Associations Between Violent And Nonviolent Criminality
Frequencies of violent and nonviolent convictions among 390 adult, male offenders were cross-tabulated, dummy coded, and analyzed by canonical correlation. Though of small magnitude, a statistically significant dimension of association between violent and nonviolent criminality was obtained, and the nature of this relationship was ascertained by means of intraset and interset structure coefficients and an index of interset redundancy. The results…

Offenders' Characteristics versus Decision-Makers' Attitudes as Determinants of the Outcome of Presentence Evaluations
Presentence cases at a state prison diagnostic unit were studied on selected variables. Inmates receiving state-level sentencing recommendations from psychiatrists and psychologists committed offenses of higher severity, coupled with a higher estimated probability of recidivism, than inmates receiving recommendations for county-level case dispositions. Also, although the group-recommendation rates of psychiatrists and psychologists versus those o…

Personality Patterns among Short-Term Prisoners Undergoing Presentence Evaluations
The MMPI profiles of 295 short-term prisoners undergoing presentence evaluations were cluster-analyzed, resulting in four distinct groups. These groups differed in IQ, on recidivism-related characteristics reflected in a Base Expectancy score and an estimate of extensiveness of arrest record, and on type of psychiatric-psychological recommendation made to the referring courts. However, they did not differ on age, educational level, or the severit…
