“That storrey reminse you to be cefl”
This study draws on theories of social semiotic perspectives on multimodality and genre as a social semiotic resource to examine one first-grader’s blended-genre nonfiction multimodal composition. Regan, the young author whose work is featured in this article, composed this sophisticated text during a nonfiction writing workshop in a school environment where she had the freedom to choose her topic and make design decisions. Regan’s elementary sch…
Primary Writers’ Identity Negotiations through Positioning in Their Compositions and the Classroom
Building on scholarship that recognizes writing as a rich site of identity negotiation, this study introduces a sociolinguistic analytic frame based on Tannen’s multidimensional power/connection grid and multimodal and visual grammars to explore young writers’ identity work. By integrating Tannen’s framework with an identity and positioning lens, we show how children’s self-authoring reflects ongoing negotiations of status and connection, either …
Examining representations of reading education in images and headlines accompanying Education Week articles on the Science of Reading
This study examined how Education Week, an education news magazine, represented reading, students, and educators in headlines and images accompanying articles on the Science of Reading. This study drew from multimodal content analysis, thematic analysis, and discourse analysis methods to analyze 87 images from 62 unique articles, opinion pieces, or special reports on the Science of Reading. The authors examined who the images featured and analyze…
Mapping Book Banning Resistance
As censorship efforts intensify across the United States, educators, librarians, and literary advocates are increasingly engaging in acts of resistance to protect students' right to read. This qualitative study examined acts of resistance reported in digital journalism. We asked: (1) What acts of resistance against book banning are reported in digital journalism, and who is enacting those acts of resistance? (2) How might these acts of resistance…
One Fourth-Grader’s Orchestration of Modes Through Comic Composition
Language-oriented literacy standards offer mostly linguistic accounts of text complexity. In response, the present article demonstrates that multimodal and visual narratives offer additional ways to understand and discuss text complexity. This descriptive analysis of one fourth-grader’s comic provides an account of the multimodal patterns and orchestration noted across the pages of the comic. Data sources included the published comic, as well as …
Analyzing picturebooks
The multimodal and visual nature of children’s picturebooks has been documented in research emanating from multiple fields of inquiry. In this article, the authors present three types of analytical frameworks that are useful for conducting research on contemporary picturebooks as multimodal entities. Each framework draws upon different aspects of visual images, design features, and written language, and uses different theoretical lenses to call f…
It’s really good medicine, Séliš (Salish)’
In the United States, state-level Indigenous education policies represent common political tools that generally aim to move extant schooling systems toward increased inclusiveness. Montana’s state law (Indian Education for All (IEFA)) is relatively robust, yet actual implementation is ad hoc and uneven. In this study, we examine a collaborative effort focused on language, namely Séliš (Salish), which has always been systematically excluded from t…
Supporting Literacy and Positive Identity Negotiations with Multimodal Comic Composing
This study explores how an alternative writing unit with a focus on comics, choice, and publishing supported positive identity development in a fourth-grade classroom. Many traditional literacy practices with an emphasis on skills marginalize students from under-represented populations. This study reports literacy practices that countered the production of previously established unequal relationships and instead supported bilingual students’ nego…
There’s no way we can teach all of this”
This mixed-methods study explored the factors secondary history teachers use to determine historical content for their classrooms and the degree of perceived control in decision-making. Through a survey (N = 260) and follow-up interviews (n = 23), we found that secondary history teachers in the United States ranked historical significance most highly in their curricular decision-making, but the extent to which teachers felt they were able to exer…
Multimodal content analysis
Research methods and analytical approaches that support inquiry in the social sciences need to respond to continual changes in the theoretical frameworks, research methods, and technologies used to support data collection and analysis in contemporary research frameworks. This article describes a variation of qualitative content analysis, termed ‘multimodal content analysis’, that draws upon previous iterations of qualitative content analysis, int…
Investigating comparative genocide teaching in two high school classrooms
This exploratory case study examined how two teachers used a comparative approach to teach genocide histories in a Holocaust Literature elective course. Through interviews and observations, we studied how the teachers guided students in comparing genocides as well as how they used survivor testimonies in their instruction. We found that teachers engaged in three types of comparison throughout the unit under study: defining genocide as the basis o…
