  • Peripheral and central auditory impairment linked to heavy metal exposure in Nicaraguan children from artisanal mining communities

Open Access•Marissa Kachadoorian, Torri Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2026

Background: Children living in artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) communities are exposed to numerous metals with possible ototoxic and neurotoxic effects. Tests of peripheral and central auditory function can reflect toxicity to the ear and brain, respectively. This study investigated the link between metal exposure and peripheral and central auditory processing (CAP) in children exposed to metals in ASGM settings. Methods: In a cross-…

  • Access to healthcare for deaf people

    Open Access•Eduardo Fuentes–López, Adrian Fuente•ARTICLE•Revista de Saúde Pública•2020

OBJECTIVE: To determine if there are existing healthcare access inequities among the deaf Chilean population when compared to the general Chilean population. METHODS: Data were obtained from a population-based national survey in Chile. In total, 745 prelingually deaf individuals were identified. The number of times the person used the healthcare system was dichotomized and analyzed using a multivariate logistic regression model. RESULTS: Prelingu…

  • Jet fuel exposure and auditory outcomes in Australian air force personnel

Open Access•Adrian Fuente, Louise Hickson et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

The results suggest that jet fuel exposure, when combined with noise exposure, has an adverse effect on audibility in humans. Taking all the test results into consideration, jet fuel exposure combined with noise exposure specifically seems to affect the peripheral hearing system in humans

  • Auditory dysfunction associated with solvent exposure

Open Access•Adrian Fuente, Bradley Mcpherson et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013

This study provides further evidence of the possible adverse effect of solvents on the peripheral and central auditory functioning. A discussion of these effects and the utility of selected hearing tests to assess SIHL is addressed

  • Self-reported hearing performance in workers exposed to solvents

Open Access•Adrian Fuente, Bradley McPhersonY et al.•ARTICLE•Revista de Saúde Pública•2013•References: 19

OBJECTIVE: To compare hearing performance relating to the peripheral and central auditory system between solvent-exposed and non-exposed workers. METHODS: Forty-eight workers exposed to a mixture of solvents and 48 non-exposed control subjects of matched age, gender and educational level were selected to participate in the study. The evaluation procedures included: pure-tone audiometry (500 - 8,000 Hz), to investigate the peripheral auditory syst…

  • Cantonese Time-Compressed Speech Test

Claudy Tsz Lam Lau, Bradley Mcpherson et al.•ARTICLE•Asia Pacific Journal of Speech…•2012

Cantonese is a Chinese dialect spoken by over 50 million speakers in China and around the world. However, few Cantonese assessment tools for (central) auditory processing disorders are available. One common auditory processing assessment tool presented to English language listeners is time-compressed speech. The present study aimed at creating a prototype time-compressed speech test in Cantonese and developing initial normative data for this popu…

  • Cantonese Dichotic Digit Test

Adrian Fuente, Bradley Mcpherson et al.•ARTICLE•Asia Pacific Journal of Speech…•2007

Little standardized assessment material exists in Cantonese for the assessment of auditory processing disorder (APD) in children or in adults. The present study aimed to create and develop normative data for an APD test, the Cantonese Double Dichotic Digit test (CDDT). A dichotic digit test refers to two different digit stimuli that are presented to each ear simultaneously. It has been recommended to include this test within APD test batteries be…
