  • Untangling the dairy paradox

    Open Access•C Davies, Chelsea A Davies et al.•ARTICLE•Appetite•2024•References: 71

Most people eat meat, yet report valuing the environment, animal life, and their health, which contradicts this dietary behaviour. The psychological discomfort aroused by this value-behaviour inconsistency, and the strategies meat eaters use to resolve this unpleasant state, is termed the 'meat paradox'. Vegetarians eschew meat consumption, but the negative implications of dairy are comparable to meat. We investigated the 'dairy paradox' in a sam…

Interviewed in 2004, designer duo Viktor and Rolf outlined their ambivalence towards fashion exhibitions suggesting that 'somehow life is taken out of the subject' (2008, cited in Teunissen, 'Understanding Fashion through the Museum in Melchior, MR, 2014). Garments seeking spectator attention within the museum space are often perceived as static entities devoid of their original function as embodied artefacts. There is no denying an inert aura pe…

  • (Un)teaching the ‘datafied student subject’

Michaela J Harrison, C Davies et al.•ARTICLE•Teaching in Higher Education•2020

That compulsory education is datafied is widely acknowledged. A significant body of literature illuminates the policy context and technologies that have given rise to what we now call datafication. Less research has focussed on the consequences of datafication on teachers and learners. In this paper, we offer a unique perspective of these consequences in relation to qualified, experienced teachers as learners on education-based masters courses. W…

  • Technological taxidermy

    C Davies•ARTICLE•Mortality•2010

In contemporary celebrity culture it would appear that there is a media obsession with exposing all facets of lifestyles pertaining to the famous. It is not surprising, therefore, that a similar preoccupation is evident when the famous die, and narratives surrounding the deaths of Jade Goody, Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson in 2009 alone are sources of continued fascination within visual culture. This paper investigates how death is made visib…
