PGmc. *skōha- ‘shoe’ re-visited
There exist competing etymologies for PGmc. *skōha- ‘shoe’, the most common one being *skōu-ko- ‘covering’ (recently revised to *skouh3-ko-). This reconstruction suffers from semantic and morphonological problems. It has also been suggested that PGmc. *skōha- is somehow related to PIE *skek- ‘move quickly’. In this paper, support is provided for the latter etymology, interpreting *skōha- as an original vṛddhi-derivative *skṓk-o- ‘of/enabling fast…
Studies in Old English and Germanic Historical Morphology
In this article, I discuss the evolution of the Old English verbs bēon ‘be’, būan, būgian, bōgian, and bȳa ‘dwell’, proposing that all of these verbs have developed via a series of paradigmatic splits which occurred at different periods of time. It is also suggested in this article that the Proto-Germanic verb generally reconstructed as *ƀūja- ‘dwell’ instead may have had the shape *ƀuwa-, reflecting not the Proto-Indo-European j-present *bhuH-…
The history of Old English būgian and bōgian ʻdwellʼ, and some related morphonological problems
In this article, an alternative historical analysis of the Old English verbs būgian and bōgian is presented, whereby it is suggested that they are relatively late formations. The verb *bū̆wōja- (> būgian) evolved out of the verb *bū̆wa- (> būan) during the Proto-Northwest Germanic era by way of a paradigmatic split. The vowel ū̆ in the root of *bū̆wōja- was subject to assimilatory lowering due to the influence of the following non-high vowels: th…
