Trajectories and inequalities in routine healthcare uptake from adolescence to retirement
Background Regular uptake of routine healthcare services can support disease prevention, early detection, monitoring, and timely treatment. Socioeconomically disadvantaged populations often face barriers to healthcare use. However, little is known about how routine healthcare uptake, and inequalities within it, unfold across the life course, or whether these trajectories differ by gender and birth cohort. Methods We used retrospectively collected…

Can Spatial Proximity to Another Country Drive Short-distance Transnationalism? Evidence from Social Ties in Three European Border Regions
This article draws inspiration from social network analysis (SNA) to investigate the impact of spatial proximity on the geography of strong social ties in three European border regions. We consider cross-border friendship and kinship as a measure of shortdistance transnationalism, examine the conditions under which the latter is likely to emerge, and systematically compares our findings with "traditional" forms of transnationalism. The study is b…
Instrumental support exchanges among kin and non-kin in light of personal configurations
As exchanges of instrumental support between kin and non-kin remain essential to buffer the impact of critical life events, we consider the characteristics of personal configurations that may enhance or hinder them. Personal configurations vary in terms of their composition and two aspects of their structure: density and centrality. These dimensions are investigated to uncover whether they influence the type of instrumental support being exchange…

Patterns of support and conflict relationships in personal networks and perceived stress
This article investigates the association between personal networks and stress, both positively through support and negatively through conflict. In a representative sample of 755 individuals residing in Switzerland, each individual was asked to name people in their lives who they perceived as very important, as well as to report their mutual support and conflict interactions. First, the article develops and investigates a typology with five relat…
Changing Attitudes Towards Gender Equality in Switzerland (2000–2017)
This paper investigates trends in Swiss women’s and men’s gender attitudes in the period 2000–2017 using the Swiss Household Panel data. Based on pooled OLS and fixed-effects models, we establish the following for women and men: (1) over this time period, attitudes towards gender roles become more egalitarian, while attitudes towards gender equality achievement remain stable; (2) the youngest cohort unexpectedly holds more traditional attitudes; …
Family Development and Residential Trajectories of Two Birth Cohorts Living in Switzerland
In a context of increasing pluralization and individualization of family forms, families would often develop through (individual) spatial mobility. This challenges a dominant view of the family that emphasises spatial proximity and residential stability in a conducive environment for family development. Using data from the Swiss survey Family tiMes and multi-channel sequence analysis, this article examines the links between residential context, r…

Paternity leave implementation in Switzerland
Transition to parenthood in Switzerland takes place in a particularly gendered institutional context. It is the only European country where men do not have access to any kind of statutory parental or paternity leaves. This study empirically investigates the extent to which institutional change âeuro" through paternity leave implementation at the company level âeuro" challenges gendered representations and practices of fatherhood. The study draws …
The Influence of Interlocked Employment–Family Trajectories on Retirement Timing
How are employment and family experiences simultaneously linked to the timing of retirement? Based on a life course perspective, this article aims to understand the way in which different work and family statuses accumulated throughout adult life, lead to early, on-time, or late withdrawals from the labor market. We focused on Switzerland, a country characterized by a liberal and flexible pension structure that provides widespread institutional m…

Multichannel Sequence Analysis Applied to Social Science Data
Applications of optimal matching analysis in the social sciences are typically based on sequences of specific social statuses that model the residential, family, or occupational trajectories of individuals. Despite the broadly recognized interdependence of these statuses, few attempts have been made to systematize the ways in which optimal matching analysis should be applied multidimensionally—that is, in an approach that takes into account multi…
How Much Does It Cost
One major methodological problem in analysis of sequence data is the determination of costs from which distances between sequences are derived. Although this problem is currently not optimally dealt with in the social sciences, it has some similarity with problems that have been solved in bioinformatics for three decades. In this article, the authors propose an optimization of substitution and deletion/insertion costs based on computational metho…
