  • Assessing the Status of Technical Documents as Textual Materials for Translation Training in Terms of Technical Terms

    Open Access•Kageura Kyo, Kyo Kageura•ARTICLE•Meta Journal des traducteurs•2019•References: 27

In this paper, we examine how methods for evaluating corpora in terms of technical terms can be used for characterising technical documents used as textual materials in translation training in a translation education setup. Technical documents are one of the standard types of textual materials used in translation training courses, and choosing suitable materials for learners is an important issue. In technical documents, technical terms play an e…

  • Building controlled bilingual terminologies for the municipal domain and evaluating them using a coverage estimation approach

    Open Access•Rei Miyata, Kyo Kageura•ARTICLE•Terminology International Journal…•2018

This article examines the status of constructed controlled terminologies from the perspective of the coverage of terms/concepts. To facilitate controlled authoring of Japanese texts of the municipal domain and promote machine translatability into English, we constructed terminologies in the following way: (1) Japanese-English term pairs are extracted from aligned texts; (2) term variations are controlled by defining preferred and proscribed terms…

  • Reflecting on human language through computer languages

    Open Access•Kyo Kageura•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2013

Apart from human languages, few sign systems are as complex and powerful as programming languages. In fact, programming languages share all the essential features of human languages. The semiotic study of programming languages can therefore contribute to our understanding of human semiosis, in addition to being an interesting and worthwhile topic of analysis in its own right. Tanaka-Ishii's Semiotics of programming focuses on the semiotic examina…

  • Analysing the status of borrowed morphemes in terminological structure

    Kyo Kageura•ARTICLE•Terminology International Journal…•2010

Borrowed morphemes play an important role in Japanese terminologies. Though several investigations have dealt with the status of borrowed morphemes in Japanese terminologies, the status of borrowed morphemes within the structure of terminologies has not been fully addressed so far. In order to clarify the status of borrowed morphemes within the terminological structure, we introduce the concept of morphological network of terminology and investig…

  • Extracting morpheme pairs from bilingual terminological corpora

Keita Tsuji, Kyo Kageura•ARTICLE•Terminology International Journal…•2001

An HMM-based method for extracting bilingual morpheme pairs from domain-specific bilingual term lists is reported in this paper. In recent years, many bilingual term lists have become available in electronic form. If the bilingual morpheme pairs in the lists are automatically identified, they can be used as bootstrapping information for the automatic identification of bilingual term pairs in bilingual textual corpora. Or, they can be used for aut…

  • Recent advances in automatic term recognition

Kyo Kageura, Masaharu Yoshioka et al.•ARTICLE•Terminology International Journal…•2000

This article provides basic background information on the articles included in this special issue on Japanese term extraction, by (i) clarifying the basic background of research into automatic term recognition, (ii) explaining briefly the ‘contest’-style workshop we organised in 1999, and (iii) briefly summarising the ATR methodologies proposed in the articles, and positioning their ideas, philosophies and methodologies within ATR from a unified …

  • An analysis of medical synonyms

Keita Tsuji, Kyo Kageura•ARTICLE•Terminology International Journal…•1998

This paper attempts to clarify the types of terms which are likely to be preferred among synonyms. We regard the term referred to by the other synonyms in a dictionary as the dominant term among synonyms. More than 2,000 pairs of Japanese synonymous terms for diseases are extracted from a standard medical dictionary, and their word-structures are analysed in relation with the preferred and non-preferred terms. It was found that the terms which in…

  • Theories 'of' terminology

    Kyo Kageura•ARTICLE•Terminology International Journal…•1998

Traditional "theory " of terminology, as far as I understand it, has two shortcomings. The first, which is now pointed out by many researchers, is that the way in which the study of terms is viewed is too restricted, and the descriptive means such as "concepts" are not rich enough. This becomes clear if one faces actual terms as empirical objects. The second shortcoming is that there is no guarantee in the "theoretical" framework itself that the …

  • A preliminary investigation of the nature of frequency distributions of constituent elements of terms in terminology

    Kyo Kageura•ARTICLE•Terminology International Journal…•1997

A preliminary investigation of the nature of frequency distributions of the constituent elements of terms in terminology is carried out, and the result is reported. In order to approximate the regularity of frequency distributions, MizutanVs (1953) formula based on the projection function was applied to eight lists of terms in various domains. The result of using the established frequency-distribution models is promising in that (1) the approxima…

  • Methods of automatic term recognition

Kyo Kageura, Bin Umino•ARTICLE•Terminology International Journal…•1996

Following the growing interest in "corpus-based" approaches to computational linguistics, a number of studies have recently appeared on the topic of automatic term recognition or extraction. Because a successful term-recognition method has to be based on proper insights into the nature of terms, studies of automatic term recognition not only contribute to the applications of computational linguistics but also to the theoretical foundation of term…

  • Toward the theoretical study of terms

    Kyo Kageura•ARTICLE•Terminology International Journal…•1995

Although the study of scientific terms is gaining in importance and although it is sometimes claimed that the study of terms constitutes an independent discipline called "terminology", there has been little research into the essential perspective from which terms are to be examined. Against this background the author attempts to clarify the nature and status of terms and how the study of scientific terms should be envisaged. As a preliminary to t…

  • Differences in linguistic representations of concepts in Japanese and English complex noun terms

    Kyo Kageura•ARTICLE•Terminology International Journal…•1994

This paper compares the characteristics of Japanese complex noun terms with those of English in the field of documentation, based on a multilingual corpus. It first presents the basic characteristics of Japanese and English terms at the formal and grammatical level, then it examines the different ways of linguistic representation of concepts in Japanese and English terms, showing that these two languages sometimes adopt different ways of represen…
