Oxford Handbook of Topic Theory
Music and Dance in the Ancien Régime
This chapter explores the contribution French noble dance made to the topical universe available to composers in the latter half of the eighteenth century. The chapter reviews the culture of dance in the ancien régime and offers a detailed analysis of the relationship between music and dance in a bourrée; the choreography for this bourrée was preserved in dance notation and published in 1700. This analysis suggests that topical references to Fren…
Topical Figurae
Musical topics have invited comparison with language ever since Leonard Ratner adopted the rhetorical termtopos. Yet topic theory has not addressed the "double articulation" of language: while words function as meaningful signs, they are articulated by meaningless elements, what Louis Hjelmslev referred to collectively as "figurae." This chapter develops an analogous theory of topical figurae, structural features that articulate multiple topics b…
The Oxford Handbook of Topic Theory
The concept of topics was introduced into the vocabulary of music scholars by Leonard Ratner to account for cross-references between eighteenth-century styles and genres. The emergence of this phenomenon followed the rapid proliferation and consolidation of stylistic and generic categories. While music theorists and critics classified styles and genres, defining their affects and proper contexts for their usage, composers crossed the boundaries b…
Communication in Eighteenth-Century Music
Written by ten leading scholars, this volume assembles studies of eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century music under the broad rubric of communication. That such an impulse motivates musical composition and performance in this period of European musical history is often acknowledged but seldom examined in depth. The book explores a broad set of issues, ranging from the exigencies of the market for books and music in the eighteenth century throu…

Texture in Penderecki’s Sonoristic Style
In his so-called “sonoristic” period of the early 1960s—represented by pieces such as Threnody , Fluorescences , Polymorphia , and others—Penderecki employed a compositional system whose axiomatic concept was not a single sound, but the sound matter in its totality. Distinct states of this sound matter were governed by two relatively independent systems: (1) a basic system which ruled the texture of sound masses and (2) a timbre system governing …
