  • The Bible as source for leadership models

    Open Access•Christo Lombaard•ARTICLE•Pharos Journal of Theology•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 2

In this contribution, earlier research by the author on the topic of leadership and the Bible is expanded upon, here to evaluate the usage of the Bible in publications on leadership. By means of Weberian ideal-type analysis, some traits of such usage are indicated, and thereupon evaluated. This is done by theologically characterisation, from the perspective of theological realism (post-secularism). Not a less evangelical, but a more evangelical a…

  • Anthropology" and the "Imago Dei" as (related) problematic concepts when considering technology

    Open Access•Christo Lombaard•ARTICLE•Pharos Journal of Theology•2022•References: 3

In this contribution an interdisciplinary contribution from Theology on the unfolding relationship between humanity and technology, is considered. In order to contribute with validity to these academic and societal reflections, two moves are required on the part of Theology. Both the external communicability of the in-house concept within Theology of "anthropology" and the internal coherence within Theology disciplines of the term "imago Dei", ha…

  • Law and Faith in Ancient Israel and in Modern Democratic Statehood as Search for Socio-Political Wellbeing

    Open Access•Christo Lombaard•ARTICLE•Scriptura•2021

In this contribution, the argument pits two cultural reflexes against one another. In modern democracies, religion is removed from the socio-political sphere; in ancient Israel, religion was inserted into the socio-political sphere. In both cases, the intention was the same: the socio-political wellbeing of the citizenry. Such a cultural comparison puts to question the false assumption in modern democracies, that a public sphere emptied of religi…

  • Aspects of the concept of theo-logy in the Old Testament

    Open Access•Christo Lombaard•ARTICLE•HTS Teologiese Studies /…•2020

In this contribution, an aspect of the research of one of the more distinct voices in South African theology, Jaco Gericke, is contextualised and outlined. Although Old Testament Theology is an oft-enough reflected on topic by South African Bible scholars, such a theology is never written by South African scholars. However, Gericke’s work tends in this direction. His work on God-talk, theo-logy, is the more important for our time, because it ofte…

Their ethical-journalistic contributions are described, keeping in mind the constraints within which they operated in th…

  • Non-Moses le Roux

    Open Access•Christo Lombaard•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2019•References: 5

Would it be altogether out of place tongue-in-cheek to compare and contrast J.H. le Roux with Moses – given that both of them are inextricably linked to the literature of the Pentateuch? Both figures took leadership positions, although not aspiring to such roles: Moses, of the legendary exodus group, in the various texts we know and debate so well; and Le Roux through the following:his work as historical exegetehis leadership of the Old Testament…

  • Three three-letter words in three recent novels in three different languages

    Open Access•Christo Lombaard, Ilze Jansone•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2017•References: 4

In this article, the authors propose to analyse the ways in which religion and sexuality are related to one another in three recent novels: (1) Fransi Phillips’s Die donker god (2007), (2) Inga Žolude’s Santa Biblia (2013) and (3) Michel Houellebecq’s Soumission [English translation: Submission] (2015). In each case, the novels are briefly placed within their respective literary cultures (Afrikaans, Latvian and French) in order to offer a context…

  • When equal becomes the same. The spirituality of sex

    Open Access•Annelise Erasmus, Christo Lombaard•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2017•References: 2

In this contribution, spirituality and sexuality are brought together as part of a quest for authenticity. In conversation with Hegel and Nietzsche, the confusion between sameness and difference as it plays out in the confusion between the public and private spheres is analysed, en route to proposing life-affirming sexual identities, including non-mainstream sexualities.Intradisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary implications: Aspects of philosoph…

  • Sensing a 'second coming

    Open Access•Christo Lombaard•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 11

In a number of academic disciplines, expression has been given to the recently rising awareness that the category of the religious has not disappeared from public life. What the masters of suspicion Feuerbach, Marx, Nietzsche, Weber, Durkheim and Freud had sensed was the intellectual spirit of their times and not the dawning of a broadly post-religious phase in Western/ised humanity. In different academic disciplines, this new awareness has been …

  • Deus ex Machina ? Religious texts, spiritual capital and inequalities

    Open Access•Christo Lombaard•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2015•Cited by: 4•References: 10

Often, theological debates stand in the tension between idealist and realist perspectives. This is true too of a discussion in which I have participated on the Africanisation or contextualisation or relevance of the Bible in (South) Africa. In this debate I have at times been cast as being opposed to such Africanisation or contextualisation or relevance. Such criticism is mistaken. I am, however, critical of too idealistic views on the ways in wh…

  • Issues in or with Genesis 22

    Open Access•Christo Lombaard•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2013•References: 1

The understanding of the Akedah (Genesis 22) has since its very inception been contentious. The psychologically disturbing and theologically challenging account renders a series of exegetical and interpretative problems. Often methodology serves to hinder a fuller perception of the elements and aspects of the text, examples of which are given here relating to the opening phrase to the chapter, the choice of literary or historical placement implie…

  • Mysticism and mind in Welby's significs

    Open Access•Christo Lombaard•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2013

In an earlier study of Welby's significs, a few brief remarks were incorporated on the denunciation of mysticism in Welby's writings. After the publication of Welby's oeuvre in a single volume – Susan Petrilli's (2009) Signifying and understanding – this aspect of Welby's intellectual output can now be investigated further. This is supplemented by archival work undertaken in the Welby collection at Senate House Library, University of London. Toge…

  • Biblical Spirituality and J.H. Eaton

    Open Access•Christo Lombaard•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2012•References: 1

In this contribution, the nature of Biblical Spirituality as an academic discipline is reviewed from a methodological perspective. Two core aspects are indicated: the importance of ancient expressions of faith (spiritualities) in the Bible, and the importance of modern expressions of faith (spiritualities) as they draw on the Bible. Based on this framework, as a first application of such a nature within the field of Biblical Spirituality, the rel…

  • Biblical Spirituality and Interdisciplinarity

    Christo Lombaard•ARTICLE•Religion and Theology•2011

The new and growing academic discipline of Biblical Spirituality draws by its very nature on two constituent fields, namely Spirituality (itself a relatively new area within the university) and biblical scholarship. These two constituent fields are characterised, in comparison, by methodological dissimilarity, which leads to considered choices that have to be made en route to refining extant models of Biblical Spirituality

  • The exile of the patriarchs amongst the prophets

    Open Access•Christo Lombaard•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2010

Usually, the primary texts on the patriarchs of the Old Testament are considered to be those in Genesis, not only as to the extent of the material offered, but also regarding the dating accorded the patriarchs in relation to the texts concerned. References to the Old Testament patriarchs in the prophetic texts are often considered to be on the margins. In this article, this exile is reversed, at least as far as the dating of the patriarchs in rel…

  • Telematiese onderrig en teologiese opleiding

Open Access•Gera De Villiers, Christo Lombaard•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2004

The new medium of the internet offers possibilities for teaching Theology unforeseen by previous generations of theological scholars. In this paper, the authors explore some difficulties inherent in such theological “education”. Seven issues are identified and briefly discussed, relating each to the matter of theological training by means of the internet: critical, insightful reading of information on the internet; breadth rather than depth of co…
