The review on Anthony Jakob’s dissertation A History of East Baltic through Language Contact
The accentuation of Latvian Curonianisms
Illič-Svityč’s reconstruction of the Curonian prosodic system is based on a less than comprehensive study of Latvian Curonianisms. Pronk uncritically endorses Illič-Svityč’s conclusions in an article on Curonian accentuation which is an accumulation of hypotheses involving language contact. Purely typological considerations do not suffice to attribute the West Latvian merger of the broken and falling tones to a Curonian substrate
On the Earliest Slavic Borrowings in East Baltic
A survey of the phonological and accentological evidence confirms that in general the early Latvian borrowings from East Slavic belong to an older layer than the early borrowings found in Lithuanian. The differences between the Latvian and the Lithuanian sound substitutions may to a certain extent mirror variation within the East Slavic donor language. It is likely that the oldest layer must be dated before the rise of the East Baltic tonal syste…

Balto-slavic accentuation
The subject of the article is the accentual evidence for a Balto-Slavic linguistic unity. Following a discussion of various recent contributions to the field of Balto-Slavic accentology, the author reaches the conclusion that Baltic and Slavic must have gone through a period of shared innovations

Metatony in Baltic
During the past decades Balto-Slavic accentology has become increasingly important for the reconstruction of Proto-Indo-European. This study tries to provide an explanation for the phenomenon of metatony in Baltic, i.e. the phenomenon that in certain Baltic forms a morpheme shows the reflex of the Balto-Slavic circumflex intonation where we would expect the reflex of the acute intonation (métatonie douce) or vice versa (métatonie rude). The subje…
