Change in Attitudes toward Smoking and Communicator Credibility as a Function of Type of Communication
The mean credibility scores for the supportive communicator and the refurative communicator were 11.39 crn. (SD = 1.04) and 10.97 cm. (SD = 1.05), respectively. This difference (.42) was not significant (r = 1.24, df = 38, n.s.) and indicates that the overall communicator credibility did not differ as a function of the type of communication by the communicator (S or R). It was discovered, however, that whereas the relationship between communicato…
Support and Refutation of a Threat-Inducing Communication in Change of Attitude toward Cigarette Smoking
A central problem of research on persuasive communications has been whether a prior communication has any effect in reducing the effectiveness of a later communicauon (Hovland, 1957). The present study reports the effects of support and refutation of a prior threat-inducing communication on change in attitudes toward cigarette smoking. Of the 86 freshmen and sophomore university students who took the modified Buer Scale for Measu~ing Attitudes to…
Examiner Differences among Stanford-Binet Items
Two reports noted examiner (E) differences for Stanford-Binet IQ scores. Relevant data provided the hypothesis that Es elicit higher IQs from Ss of the opposite sex. 5 male and 5 female Caucasian Es each tested at least 9 4-yr.-old Negro Ss ( N = 446). A factorial design evaluated effects of sex of Ss, sex of Es, between- E differences, and several interactions. Major dependent variables were IQs and an index of number of items administered each …
Alternation Learning and its Relationship to Intellectual Functioning in Primary Retardates
This report relates Jensen Alternation Board (JAB) performance of 50 white male primary retardates to their S-B IQ and PPVT IQ scores. The results demonstrated that use of the JAB with retardates was feasible, however, little variance was accounted for by using S-B IQ and PPVT IQ tests as predictors. The hypothesis that the JAB is not a conventional IQ test in retardates, as in mental patients, was supported
