Gender Differences in Consumer Debt Stress
Consumer Search Behavior in the Changing Credit Card Market
This article investigates whether search costs inhibit consumers from searching for lower credit card interest rates. The results provide evidence that the credit card search environment has changed since the mid-1990s. Using the 2001 Survey of Consumer Finances, we model consumers' propensity to search and their probability of being denied credit simultaneously and find that larger credit card balances induce cardholders to search more even thou…
Is Combat Pay Effective? Evidence from Operation Desert Storm
Objective. To determine whether combat pay for U.S. Army officers has been adequate to maintain troop strength during wartime in the all‐volunteer military. Methods. Data from a panel survey of 3,800 officers collected one year prior to Operation Desert Storm and again during the Iraqi engagement are used. The primary economic indicator of work disutility—the marginal rate of substitution (MRS) or tradeoff of time for money—is estimated; and the …
Loss Aversion and Adaptation in the Labor Market
This paper presents empirically determined indifference functions for income and leisure which exhibit the phenomena of loss aversion and a utility reference point determined by adaptation, as expounded by Kahneman and Tversky and others. Data for this study were gathered in original surveys of seven diverse labor markets. The indifference functions of all show common features consistent with loss aversion/adaptation. These features help explain …
Category Versus Continuous Survey Responses in Economic Modelling
Choice of survey response format involves a tradeoff between information content and measurement error. Estimation precis ion is examined with (1) a Monte Carlo study where ordered logit fits of categorized data with no measurement error are compared with OLS fit s using the same data in continuous form but incorporating substantial measurement error; and (2) an OLS versus ordered logit comparison us ing actual data where 3, 800 Army officers sta…
An Empirical Study of Labor Market Equilibrium Under Working Hours Constraints
Predictions of economic theory for the equilibrium condition of workers in three labor markets with differing working hours constraints are tested. Original data allow the marginal rate of substitution of income for leisure to be estimated directly. In two markets, working hours constraints resulting from high fixed employment costs and the overtime premium, respectively, cause workers to desire fewer and more hours. In the third market (agricult…
Absenteeism as a Mechanism for Approaching an Optimal Labor Market Equilibrium

Work Disutility and Compensating Differentials
This paper investigates the positive wage-firm size relationship using a sample of workers performing the same jobs in different-sized firms. Controlling for skill differences, wages are still found to be higher in larger firms. Using an estimate of the marginal rate of substitution of income for leisure as a measure of job disutility, the difference in wages between large and small firms is found to be greater than the difference in disutility, …
Measuring the value of community
An Empirical Indifference Function for Income and Leisure
IN an earlier work, a survey technique has been developed for collecting and analyzing a set of subjective economic data in order to investigate the income-leisure preferences of a group of workers (Dunn, 1975). The marginal rates of substitution of wage income for leisure were obtained for a sample of low-income workers without using the competitive assumptions to equate them to existing wage rates. In the present paper we use these data to obta…
