Testing Broken Windows Theory in Mexico City
Objectives To test the broken windows theory in the Mexican context. Methods Publicly available homicide counts and census data at the neighborhood level were used. Broken windows theory was operationalized through the use of social disorder and physical disorder measures. Measures were both calculated using PCA. For data analysis, we employed four multilevel random intercept models to relate homicide counts to our broken windows components. Resu…
A descriptive model of the relationship between police CCTV systems and crime. Evidence from Mexico City
We test the relationship of police closed circuit television (CCTV) systems with crime at the census block level. Our descriptive model is based on environmental criminology theory and spatial modeling. We use as case study the Colonia Roma neighborhood in Mexico City which is a neighborhood characterized by high density, mixed uses, and high levels of crime. We found that CCTV correlated only with non-violent crime and, further, that crime was m…
Fear of crime and home security systems
Survey data of 1549 households in the Mexico City metropolitan area were analyzed to examine the relationship between fear of crime and home security systems. Ordinal regression analysis shows home security systems unrelated to fear of crime when home alone. Additionally, findings are that fear of crime is mostly felt by female, young, low-income individuals, and by those who do not trust their local police. Fear of crime is also felt by individu…
How Exactly Does Place Matter in Crime Analysis? Place, Space, and Spatial Heterogeneity
This article has four aims. First is to clarify the origins and different meanings of place, space, and other basic concepts in spatial analysis. The second aim is to reiterate the illogicality of the spatial homogeneity assumption in ordinary least squares (OLS) regression. An illustration of the comparison between traditional OLS and geographically weighted regression modeling is included for this purpose. The third aim is to explain that place…
