The Symbolism of Water in Early Christian Baptisteries
The symbolism of water in the Early Christian baptisteries was not expressed in the architecture of the building but rather in its decoration. This article illustrates the references to water in the sculptures and inscriptions of the fourth and fifth-century phases of the Lateran baptistery in Rome. This decoration shows that the water was a symbol ofboth li fe and death: the death of the sinner and the life of God, to which baptism gave access
Were the Emperor Constantine’s Christian Basilicas Bright or Dark? The Windows of Old St. Peter’s
Renaissance documentation, especially by Tiberio Alfarano, shows that the basilica of Old St. Peter’s had 11 windows on each side, half the number of the columns on each side of the nave. Only Alfarano gives their measures. The problem is that, according to him, the windows were so broad that it is difficult to imagine that there originally was one window above each intercolumnium. For this reason, most modern reconstructions show one window abov…

San Lorenzo fuori le mura
In the study of ancient buildings and monuments, only on rare occasions, there is a crystal-clear relationship between the information given by texts and that found in the physical remains of the structure. A good example is the U-shaped basilica in the complex of San Lorenzo fuori le mura in Rome, excavated in 1950. Usually it is identified with a basilica built in the early fourth century by Emperor Constantine, according to the sixth-century s…

I muri trasversali di Santa Croce in Gerusalemme e la sinagoga di Ostia
The reasons behind the unusual internal division of the first phase of the church of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme have never been fully explained. This paper proposes an explanation of the phenomenon with the help of a comparison with the Synagogue of Ostia Antica
Constantine, the Lateran, and Early Church Building Policy
It is a common view that Constantine chose to build the Lateran basilica and baptistery in a peripherical position in Rome, far removed from public buildings in the city center, in order not to offend the pagan aristocracy. The aim of this paper is not to answer the question “why”, but rather to discuss categories like “public”, “private” and “temple” in the context of the fourth century church building in Rome, with a special attention to the ca…
