Open Access•Marco Aurelio Golfetto, Letizia Osti et al.•ARTICLE•Lingue Culture Mediazioni -…•2022•References: 6

[One day, the famous grammarian] al-Farrā’ made several mistakes while speaking in the presence of Hārūn al-Rašīd. [The vizier] Ja‘far b. Yaḥyā al-Barmakī pointed this out to the caliph, who said: “Al-Farrā’, are you speaking incorrectly?”. “Commander of the Faithful”, replied al-Farrā’, “while it is natural for the Beduins to inflect words correctly, for citydwellers [like me] it is not. When I prepare, I speak correctly; when I speak off the cu…

  • Al-Ḥallāǧ

    Letizia Osti•ARTICLE•Quaderni di Studi Arabi•2021

This note examines one cluster of accounts on the trial of al-Ḥallāǧ (d. 309/922) in two near-contemporary and one later historian, looking at how each author uses the material and how such material functions within their specific work

  • Culture, Education and the Court

Letizia Osti•CHAPTER•Crisis and Continuity at the…•2013

The topics of culture and learning in the classical Islamic world have intrigued many modern scholars. Few studies, however, focus on the time which preceded the advent of madrasas as the standard educational institution. The caliphate of al-Muqtadir is often described as the golden age of Arabic culture; it therefore provides plenty of examples of lives which, in retrospect, can be seen as caught between an effervescent cultural debate and the s…

  • Crisis and Continuity at the Abbasid Court

Maaike Van Berkel, Nadia Maria El Cheikh et al.•BOOK•Crisis and Continuity at the…•2013

The reign of al-Muqtadir (295-320/908-32) is a crucial and controversial epoch in the history of the Abbasid empire. Al-Muqtadir's regime has traditionally been depicted as one of decline, when the political power of the caliphate and the lustre of its capital began to crumble. This book not only offers a substantial investigation of the idea and reality of decline, but also provides new interpretations of the inner workings of the court and the …

  • The Practical Matters of Culture in Pre-Madrasa Baghdad

    Letizia Osti•ARTICLE•Oriens•2010

While much research has been carried out on the topic of classical Islamic education, most of this has focused on the post-madrasa period starting in the late fifth/eleventh century. Basing itself on narrative material from biographies, adab works and chronicles, this paper explores the fluid system in which scholars earned a living and acquired authoritativeness at an earlier time, also attempting to illustrate how culture and its various compon…

  • A study of nine polymorphic systems in the population of the Po Delta

Open Access•P Lucarelli, Rosa Maria Corbo et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1976

The present work reports a study of nine genetic polymorphic systems in the area of the Po Delta where malaria was endemic since the XIV century. Our data confirm some characteristics of this population already reported by other authors such as the high prevalence of thalassemia, the low prevalence of the rh (d) gene and the presence of G‐6‐PD deficiency. Among the other systems studied, i.e., AP, PGM 1 ADA and AK, only AP frequencies of Po Delta…

  • Notes on a Private Library in Fourth/Tenth-Century Baghdad

    Open Access•Letizia Osti•ARTICLE•Journal of Arabic and Islamic…•1970

Studies on medieval Arabic bibliophilia have mainly focussed on public and semi-public institutions, for some of which we have detailed information. Less is known about private libraries and their physical arrangement. This paper looks at the library of Abū Bakr al-Ṣūlī (d. 335/947), which is described by the sources in unique terms, contextualising it with al-Ṣūlī’s own words on collecting and organizing books
