A Targeted Crime Reduction Implementation
Crime in Seattle, WA (USA), has long been concentrated in a few discrete geographic areas. This study examines the impact of a one-year place-based soft policing intervention to reduce crime and disorder in these two acutely affected areas: The Blade and Little Saigon. Employing Bayesian Structural Time Series (BSTS) to estimate the treatment effect of the intervention on several crimes and calls for service measures, we find mixed results with i…
Detecting hate crimes through machine learning and natural language processing
Misidentification and misreporting of hate crimes by victims and law enforcement are significant barriers to accurate data collection of hate crimes, and their consequent study and prevention. The use of machine learning in crime detection can improve the accuracy and speed at which reported incidents with bias elements are identified. This study develops a machine learning classifier that categorizes police reports as either events with bias ele…
Does Democracy Matter for Lifespan Inequalities? Regime Type and Premature Mortality by Sex
Reductions in premature mortality are widely attributed to economic, educational, and medical factors. This study contributes to our understanding of the influence of political factors in preventing early death and gender inequalities in health outcomes. We analyze data from life tables of the World Health Organization, 2000–2015, to estimate the annual, sex-specific standard deviation of the age-at-death distribution across 162 countries. We app…
