Using Social Media for Economic Disaster Evaluation
We propose the usage of social media as the primary way to collect and consolidate disaster data to provide a less costly and faster economic evaluation process. Through a systematic literature review (SLR) of over 406 peer-reviewed papers, this study first offers a taxonomy to show how social media can be applied to economic disaster assessments. Then we deliver an economic assessment to a flooding disaster in Brazil based on text mining of Twit…
Infant mortality and breast-feeding in North-Eastern Brazil
The effects of breast-feeding on infant health have been a topic of considerable discussion in recent years. In this paper multivariate techniques are used to examine the relationship between the failure to breast-feed and mortality among infants in four states of north east Brazil. It was found that breast-fed children were significantly more likely to survive infancy than children who were never breast-fed, even when other socio-economic, demog…
Breastfeeding and Use of the Health Care System in Bahia State, Brazil
Three multivariate methods--deviation from total proportion breastfeeding, polynomial regression, and proportional hazards--are used on current status breastfeeding data to explain an inverse relationship between use of the health care system and breastfeeding in Bahia State, Brazil. Among the intervening variables analyzed--urban/rural residence, educational attainment, age of woman, and place of last live birth--education and place of last live…

Analysis of Breastfeeding in Northeastern Brazil
Data from the 1980 Survey of Maternal-Child Health/Family Planning in Northeastern Brazil (Bahia Paraiba Pernambuco and Rio Grande do Norte) indicate a mean duration of breastfeeding of 6.6 months and a mean postpartum amenorrhea of 3.8 months. Given the relatively high infant mortality in the area and the known health benefits of breastfeeding the short duration can be considered to have a deleterious effect on the health of the population. The …
