  • Dose- and Age-Dependent Ectopic Pregnancy Risks with Intrauterine Contraception

    Irving Sivin•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1991

Analyses of randomized trials of copper intrauterine devices (IUDs) substantiate three hypotheses: 1) Ratios of ectopic to total pregnancies conceived during copper IUD use did not differ among devices; 2) pregnancy rates per 1000 woman-years varied inversely with copper surface area; and 3) ectopic pregnancy rates consequently varied inversely by copper surface area. Randomized trials also demonstrated that progestin-only IUDs had a markedly hig…

  • The Prentif Cervical Cap and Pap Smear Results

Erica L Gollub, Irving Sivin•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1990

An analysis from a randomized study has suggested that a larger percentage of Class III Pap smears appears among Prentif cervical cap users three months after initiation of use of the method than among diaphragm users. This suggestion has been the basis of a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirement that women seeking to use the cap have Pap smears taken before initiating use and again after three months of use. The data fron the pivota…

  • IUDs are Contraceptives, Not Abortifacients

    Irving Sivin•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1989•Cited by: 2

No studies show that IUDs destroy developing embryos at rates higher than those found in women who are not using contraceptives. Studies of early pregnancy factors have not shown statistically significant differences in transient levels of hCG between IUD and control groups, a sign of early abortion. The small, careful study by Segal et al. (1985) found no transient rise of hCG in the IUD group. The highly sensitive assay in a larger sample of IU…

  • Effectiveness of IUDs

Irving Sivin, Frederick H Schmidt et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1988

Large, multicenter, randomized trials of IUDs conducted between 1970 and 1986 encompass more than 50,000 woman-years of experience in the two-year interval following device insertion. Taken singly and collectively, these trials demonstrate that IUD failure rates are strongly affected by the age of participants, notably by the proportion of women under age 25 admitted to the studies. Individual trials and overall comparisons indicate further that:…

  • International Experience with NORPLANT and NORPLANT-2 Contraceptives

    Irving Sivin•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1988•Cited by: 4

Experience encompassing more than 20,000 woman-years of use of NORPLANT capsules and 6,000 woman-years of trials of NORPLANT-2 rods is reviewed. Implant contraception repeatedly has been associated with low pregnancy rates and high continuation rates through five full years of use. Weight has proved to be a factor related to effectiveness. Women weighing less than 50 kg experienced cumulative five-year pregnancy rates well below 1 per 100, wherea…

  • Recovery of Fertility After Use of the Levonorgestrel 20 mcg/day or Copper T 380 Ag Intrauterine Device

Hedia Belhadj, Irving Sivin et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1987

  • Use Effectiveness of the Prentif cervical cap in Private Practice

Hans Lehfeldt, Irving Sivin•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1985

Of two-hundred-sixty women seeking cervical cap contraception, exactly half subsequently used the Prentif cavity rim cap as their sole method of contraception. The one year continuation rate for these exclusive cap users was 56.7 per hundred. No major side effects related to the use of the Prentif cap were observed in the course of this study, involving 918 women-months in year 1. Pregnancy and dislodgement of the cap during use were the principa…

  • Intrauterine Contraception with Copper and with Levonorgestrel

Irving Sivin, Francisco Alvarez et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1985

First year results of a randomized study of 1509 users of the Copper T380Ag with a silver core or of an IUD releasing 20 mcg day of levonorgestrel are reported. The cumulative gross pregnancy rate for each device was 0.3 per 100 at one year, with more than 490 women having one year of use with each device. The levonorgestrel-releasing device was associated with significantly fewer bleeding days and significantly increased hemoglobin levels when c…

  • IUDs and Ectopic Pregnancy

    Irving Sivin•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1983

Ectopic pregnancies have risen dramatically in North America and in parts of Europe in the last 20 years. It has been suggested that the IUD may be 1 of the causes of the increase. This article examines data from studies in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Sweden and concludes that the risk of ectopic pregnancy for IUD users is not greater than, and possibly less than, that for nonusers of contraception. There are no data that support a…

  • The NORPLANT Contraceptive Method

Irving Sivin, Francisco Alvarez-Sanchez et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1982

NORPLANT subdermal implants used for contraception by 816 women in international clinical trials have proved to be highly effective: the 3 year cumulative net 1st segment pregnancy rate was 0.7 per 100 acceptors. The 1st segment continuation rate was 45 per 100 initial acceptors which is comparable to that associated with IUDs. (authors)

  • Life-Table Analysis of Iuds

Anrudh K Jain, Irving Sivin•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1977

Biological tissues and biomaterials are often defined by unique spatial gradients in physical properties that impart specialized function over hierarchical scales. The structure of these materials forms continuous transitional gradients and discrete local microenvironments between adjacent (or within) tissues, and across matrix-cell boundaries, which is difficult to replicate with common scaffold systems. Here, the matrix densification of collage…

  • A Comparison of the Copper T-200 and the Lippes Loop in Four Countries

    Irving Sivin•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1976

A comparative field trial of the Copper TCu-200 and the Lippes loop was conducted in Colombia, Iran, Korea, and Thailand from 1971 to 1973. The study, involving 7,400 women, provided two-year first segment continuation and termination rates. In three countries, TCu-200 expulsion rates were significantly below Lippes loop expulsion rates. For women with three or fewer living children, TCu-200 expulsion rates were markedly below Lippes loop rates i…

  • The Effectiveness of the Copper-T Intrauterine Device

    Irving Sivin•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1973

Investigators in 5 countries collaborated with the Population Council to study the use-effectiveness of a new intrauterine contraceptive -- a T-shaped inert plastic device modified to bear 200 mm of exposed copper surface. After clinical trials in Santiago, Chile, the TCu-200 was tested on a total of 6257 women in the U.S.A., Colombia, Iran, Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand from May to November 1971. Postacceptance data are available for 95.3%, most o…
