Improving precision instrument cleaning with a quality control module
Objective To evaluate the effectiveness of a cleaning quality control module integrated into a hospital’s Disinfection Supply Center (DSC) for improving the cleaning quality of precision surgical instruments. Methods In June 2023, a cleaning quality control module was implemented in our hospital’s DSC to optimize reprocessing procedures. This module recorded deviations through textual, photographic, and video records. A comparative cohort study w…
Interday Stability of Taxi Travel Flow in Urban Areas
Taxi travel flow patterns and their interday stability play an important role in the planning of urban transportation and public service facilities. Existing studies pay little attention to the stability of the travel flow patterns between days, and it is difficult to consider the impact of dynamic changes in daily travel demand analysis when supporting related decision making. Taxi trajectory data have been widely used in urban taxi travel-patte…
Money or Attention? Sex Differences in Reactions to Social Exclusion
We examined differences in the ways in which men and women perceive and react to social exclusion. Men typically experience agentic-type threats in a social exclusion context and are motivated to improve their agentic belief in themselves, whereas women experience communal-type threats and pay greater attention to others. In this study, we employed the pursuit of money as an agentic form of compensation and pursuit of attention as a communal form…

Implementation of a demographic and contraceptive surveillance system in four counties in north China
Determinants of Induced Abortion and their Policy Implications in Four Countries in North China
A retrospective survey conducted in four counties in North China in 1991-92 shows that the probability of aborting a pregnancy is strongly related to parity. No induced abortions are found prior to the first live birth, and almost universal abortion is shown after the second. Women had a high risk of undergoing abortion after their first live birth because most (82 percent) had become pregnant again without meeting official requirements for late …
IUD Discontinuation Patterns and Correlates in Four Counties in North China
This study presents an in-depth analysis of IUD discontinuation patterns and correlates in four counties in North China for the years following the introduction of provincial family planning regulations and the family planning target responsibility system. It is based on contraceptive-use data from 8,630 rural married women younger than 35. The gross IUD discontinuation rate was low among women with one child. The pattern of discontinuation was d…

Birth Spacing Patterns and Correlates in Shaanxi, China
This study shows that most women in Shaanxi Province, China try to have their first birth as soon as possible after their first marriage, and that the length of the interval between marriage and first birth is strongly correlated with the woman's age at first marriage. The length of the second and third birth intervals and the likelihood of going on to have a second or third birth are strongly influenced by the sex composition of children already…
A Demographic Decomposition of the Recent Increase in Crude Birth Rates in China
The triple standardization method was used to estimate the separate effect of changes in age structure marriage pattern and marital fertility on the crude birth rate in China. The decomposition method is described. Data were from the 1982 Census the 1987 1% Population Survey and the 1988 2/1000 Fertility and Contraceptive Survey. Single-year age data for 1981 and 1987 were estimated nationally and for each province based on the 1982 population ce…
The Effects of Breastfeeding and Birth Spacing on Child Survival in China
Using data from the In-depth Fertility Survey, conducted in Shanghai Municipality and Shaanxi Province, People's Republic of China, in April 1985, this study shows that breastfeeding and birth spacing have significant effects on child survival in Shaanxi, but not in Shanghai (controlling for potential confounding factors and reverse causality). The effect of breastfeeding decreases with age. Introducing proper supplemental food is very important …
