Leading Causes of Unintentional and Intentional Injury Mortality
Objectives. We have described national trends for the 5 leading external causes of injury mortality. Methods. We used negative binomial regression and annual underlying cause-of-death data for US residents for 2000 through 2009. Results. Mortality rates for unintentional poisoning, unintentional falls, and suicide increased by 128%, 71%, and 15%, respectively. The unintentional motor vehicle traffic crash mortality rate declined 25%. Suicide rank…
Suicides among older United States residents
Suicide rates for elderly US residents decreased between 1950 and 1980, but have increased recently. We analyzed suicide mortality trends using national mortality data for the period 1980 through 1986. Suicide rates during this period increased for each 5-year age group over age 65. Elderly White males have the highest suicide rates and experienced a rate increase of 23%. The rate for Black males rose by 42%. Divorced males have the highest age-a…
Fall Mortality and Related Medical Conditions in the Elderly
To investigate whether selected medical conditions increase an older person's risk of fall mortality, we analyzed 1985 multiple-cause-of-death data for persons aged 65 years or older. The 8,713 cases had a fall listed as the underlying cause of death; the 1,438,872 controls all had noninjury causes of death. Pulmonary embolism, syncope, and alcohol dependence syndrome were all strongly associated with fall deaths (prevalence odds ratio; POR = 11.…
