  • Long-Acting Contraceptives Rationale, Current Development, and Ethical Implications

    George F Brown•ARTICLE•The Hastings Center Report•1995

All stages of contraceptive development and introduction must\ninclude ethical debate at the country level, in order to inform legislative\nbodies, public health officials, and service providers as they seek to\nintroduce new contraceptive technologies. New technologies are needed to fill\nimportant gaps, especially user-controlled methods for women, a broader range\nof choices for men, and methods that can prevent STD and HIV transmission. The\n…

  • Functions of privacy in wilderness environments

    William E Hammitt, George F Brown•ARTICLE•Leisure Sciences•1984•Cited by: 5•References: 9

Westin (1967), in his Privacy and Freedom, suggests that there are four basic functions of privacy in society (personal autonomy, emotional release, self‐evaluation, limited and protected communication). Westin's theoretical model was examined for its utility in understanding the functions of privacy in wilderness environments. Importance ratings of 106 wilderness users for 28 scale items which characterized the privacy functions were factor anal…

  • United Nations International Conference on Population, Mexico City, 6-13 August 1984

    George F Brown•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1984•Cited by: 1

Ten years after the first United Nations Conference on Population was held in Bucharest, there appears to be a remarkable degree of international agreement on the advances that have been made in population policies and programs, and on the priority problems that we now face. This agreement was clearly voiced at the International Conference on Population held in Mexico City in August 1984, which met to review past developments and make recommendat…

  • Sub-Saharan Africa 1974

Hervé Gauthier, George F Brown•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1975

Of all the regions of the world, Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest birth and death rates and the lowest level of family planning activity. In fact, continuing high mortality rates are unquestionably a major reason why a sizable number of African countries have made little or no effort to develop significant family planning programs. In several other countries, family planning is accepted as a health measure and is linked with maternal and child …

  • Tunisia’s experience in family planning

    Open Access•Warren G Povey, George F Brown•ARTICLE•Demography•1968•Cited by: 3

The history of family planning activity in Tunisia from 1962 to 1968 may be divided into 3 periods. The experimental program during June 1964-May 1966 was undertaken by the Ministry of Health with a supporting Ford Foundation grant and technical assistance from the Population Council. Family planning centers offered IUDs condoms and vaginal creams for no charge. Tubal ligations and social abortions were done in government hospitals. 18523 women r…

  • Moroccan family planning program—Progress and problems

    Open Access•George F Brown•ARTICLE•Demography•1968•Cited by: 2

The concept of family planning is new to Morocco. Public discussion is still hesitant, and policy therefore remains tentative. The results of the first two and onehalf years of the Government’s Family Planning Program have been modest, and do not begin to have any influence on demographic trends. Nonetheless the program represents a considerable step forward in terms of policy development and movement toward action. Demographic, sociological and …
