Academic Health Center–Community Justice Program Partnerships
We conclude with a discussion of some challenges we encountered and lessons we learned about establishing and sustaining partnerships with court, probation, parole, reentry, and diversion programs while educating the next generation of public health leaders
Cultural Competency Training for Public Health Students
Cultural competency training in public health, medicine, social work, nursing, dental medicine, and other health professions has been a topic of increasing interest and significance. Despite the now burgeoning literature that describes specific knowledge, attitudes, and skills that promote cultural “competence,” fully defining this complex, multidimensional term and implementing activities to enhance it remain a challenge. We describe our experie…
Prior Pill Experiences and Current Continuation Among Pill Restarters
When counseling women who are restarting pill use, providers should ask about their experiences with the method and reasons for discontinuation; counseling for women who discontinued because of side effects should address their risk factors for early discontinuation and informing them about other contraceptive choices
Race/Ethnicity and Women’s Use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine in the United States
Objectives. We studied the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) among women in 4 racial/ethnic groups: non-Hispanic Whites, African Americans, Mexican Americans, and Chinese Americans. Methods. We obtained a nationally representative sample of women aged 18 years and older living in the United States in 2001. Oversampling obtained 800 interviews in each group, resulting in a sample of 3068 women. Results. Between one third and one …
Potential barriers to the removal of Norplant among family planning clinic patients
OBJECTIVES: This study examined the prevalence and effects of potential barriers to removal of levonorgestrel implants (Norplant) among low-income women. METHODS: A sample of 687 women who received Norplant at hospital-based family planning clinics were interviewed before Norplant insertion and 6 months after Norplant insertion (or at Norplant removal if removal occurred earlier). Those who continued to use Norplant were reinterviewed at 2 years …
The Consequences of Placing versus Parenting Among Young Unmarried Women
This paper compares the consequences of placing versus parenting for young women who experienced a non-marital teenage pregnancy. We examined whether placers were faring better, worse or no differently from parenters four years after giving birth. The findings clearly indicate that relative to parenting, resolving a teenage pregnancy by relinquishing one's infant for adoption is a positive choice resulting in more favorable outcomes on a broad va…
Openness in Adoption
This article describes the experiences of young, American birth mothers with regard to openness in adoption process and arrangement. Generally, larger proportions of the sample have experienced moderate, or semi-open, arrangements than those involving direct contact with the adoptive family. The associations between these experiences and a series of social psychological outcomes are examined at four years post-relinquishment. The data reveal that…
Injectable contraceptive discontinuation and subsequent unintended pregnancy among low-income women
OBJECTIVES: This study investigated rates of discontinuation of the recently introduced injectable contraceptive depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) and postdiscontinuation rates of unprotected intercourse and unintended pregnancy. METHODS: A sample of 402 low-income, urban, minority women were interviewed when they initiated DMPA use and 12 months later. RESULTS: The 12-month life-table discontinuation rate was 58%, with half of the discont…
Determinants of Early Implant Discontinuation among Low-income Women
The determinants of contraceptive implant discontinuation within six months of insertion were examined among 786 low-income women attending family planning clinics in three U.S. cities. The six-month cumulative life-table discontinuation rate was 7.6%. Menstrual side effects were the most common reasons given for early implant removal, although women who discontinued use were no more likely than those who continued with the method to report menst…
Paediatric Aids
This study provides survey data gathered from hospital-based paediatricians in New York City regarding several key issues in the diagnosis and treatment of paediatric AIDS. These include: perceived risk of acquiring HIV through professional exposure; referral patterns in the treatment of HIV-infected children; attitudes regarding the universal testing of pregnant women and newborns; willingness to raise prevention issues during health-maintenance…
The Determinants of Young Women's Pregnancy-Resolution Choices
A longitudinal study of young women's pregnancy resolution decision making provided evidence of the important role of significant others; also observed was a positive association between prior adoption socialization experiences and the choice of adoption. Conceptual approaches to decision making considered in the analysis included opportunity structures, socialization, social networks, and expectancy value theory. Subjects included 527 unmarried …

Debra Kalmuss, Andrew Davidson, Linda Cushman, Parenting Expectations, Experiences, and Adjustment to Parenthood: A Test of the Violated Expectations Framework, Journal of Marriage and Family, Vol. 54, No. 3 (Aug., 1992), pp. 516-526
Changes in Menstrual Symptoms among Sterilized and Comparison Women
Changes in menstrual parameters after tubal sterilization were analyzed in ethnically diverse, poor women from three geographic areas in the United States. Two large suitable comparison groups were similarly studied. Menstrual cycles, duration of menstrual flow, and bleeding between periods were unchanged in the sterilization and comparison groups. The prevalence of dysmenorrhea increased in 10.8% of sterilized women, compared with 2.1% in the co…
